Raleigh, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes had to make tough decisions to trim their roster down to 23 players before Wednesday's season opener, and that meant placing forward Jordan Martinook on waivers Friday.
Martinook joined the Hurricanes in 2018 and has become a fan favorite. He has been an alternate captain the previous three seasons.
“It’s vital that we maximize our flexibility prior to finalizing the opening day roster. Our expectation is that Jordan will be a part of our group as we try to bring a championship to Raleigh this season," said Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell.
If Martinook is claimed by another NHL team, that team will assume his existing contract. Martinook has two years remaining on his deal and is due to make $1.8M this season and $2.7M next season.
If Martinook is not claimed, he can join the Hurricanes' AHL team.
