Roddy Gets The Shaft

  For the first time in his career, Roddy was a healthy scratch for a game. John Forslund said Rod was "surprised" and took it hard, as did his teammates. Roddy has been the heart and soul of the Canes and to treat him with such blatant disrespect is disappointing and disgusting. Rod is the Captain of the team, and no one can match his intensity, passion and work ethic. I have lost a lot of respect for Jim Rutherford and the Canes Organization.

  ^^^^^I know what you're saying, but there are ways to handle situations like this and I don't think Rutherford handled it well, and that's my complaint. I think Roddy deserves to be treated with respect, not just tossed aside. I know it's a difficult situation. I remember when Ronnie Francis was pushed aside for Staal, and I hated that as well. It's hard to see a player of such stature and pedigree being replaced by other younger players. It's part of life, but I feel for those guys.

  I think that he didn't get the shaft except the way he was told. I think what may be happening is they are possibly thinking about replacing McCarthy with Roddy. Barasso is now doing what McCarthy was doing and Roddy wouldn't be a bad choice to add to the coaching mix. Scratching him for one game mayhave been a test to the rest of the team to see how they performed without him on the ice. I don't think he will leave the organization, maybe just the ice. To be honest I have not really been impressed with his play ever since he had had that awful knee injury. While he is captain that can be passed to someone else and he would still retain team leadership roles as part of the coaching staff. This could very well be a win win situation.

  ^^^Do you think he'd accept a coaching job? He seems like he isn't ready to give up his playing career yet. I agree that his play hasn't been the same since his ACL injury last Valentine's Day. I had hoped all his rehab would have prepared him for a good season. His poor play isn't for lack of trying, that's for sure. I would love to see Roddy stay with the organization. I'm afraid he'll get frustrated (like Ronnie Francis did) and leave for another team,although I'm not sure who would be interested in him. I have so much respect for Brindy. I will nefer forget him hoisting the Cup - it's one of my all time favorite memories in sports.

  Maybe he can get traded to a Stanley Cup contender as the final piece to their winning puzzle. Then he could go out winning another Cup and then come back to the Canes. It seems unrealistic that he doesn't recognize that he is not the same player from a skating perspective. Grit, work-ethic, determination, etc is all still there and impressive, but if he doesn't have the speed in his legs, he doesn't have it. Some folks never fully come back from a knee injury. The ones who do play a sport where they can hide (i.e. DH in baseball) - but you can't hide in hockey. As much as he probably does not want to stop playing, if his skills don't get him on the ice in the NHL, I don't see him getting demoted to the AHL.
  It may be that coaching is sooner than he wants....

  Totally agree. Even if he sits on the bench he will always be remembered and looked upon with the utmost respect by everyone. But this is professional sports. We have to do what we have to do to win games. That's the whole objective, to try and win. Brind'Amour now is at a league high of minus 19. He may be our captain, but he's not playing well at all. Last year I think his entire season was a minus 23. When you get older you don't bounce back from injuries like you did when you were 24. And even then, you may not be able to.

  I thnk he would accept a coaching job, I think it would be a good move for this team, or even another team. He loves the game and that is obvious. I thnk if it were not for the knee injury this conversation would not even be taking place. His skill level is there, he's a smart hockey player, his legs just aren't anymore. He would be a great person for player development, he didn't get his Captain status or his achievements by sitting back on his laurels waiting for others to do things for him. He's definitely not at the point where he needs to be completely off the ice but sometime in the near future I beleive he would be better mentoring younger players, just my opinion.

  Roddy use to be a great player. He is like me, getting too old to do the job like it should be done. He needs to retire after this year. He is the Canes captain and main man and he should go out with his head high. This year is a done deal. Let him finish it out with his head up high.

  I agree. I would love to see him stay with the Canes though. I have so much respect for Roddy, and I don't want to see him with another team in any capacity. This must be very tough for him to live with. Roddy is very proud, and it can't be easy to have his minutes diminish while younger players take his spot. Ronnie Francis was in a similar position, and I'm glad he came back in a coaching capacity with the Canes.
