  I grew up with hockey in Greensboro with the Generals in I guess the 60's and 70's or maybe earlier. Every game should be televised maybe not in Raleigh, if it is not sold out, but everywhere else. It takes more talent to play the game of hockey than any other sport there is. It should be shown off. They can do more on skates than the average person can do on their feet without skates. I hate it when they are not on TV. I live 60 or more miles away but I still love the Hurricanes.

  Its not that the "hick homeys" have anything against hockey, they don't like the people who force hockey down their throats. You know the type, guy who sells his over-inflated suburban Boston shack at 300% profit before the bubble bursts, leaves the suckers behind and buys a mansion here, pats himself on the back for his brilliant financial ~prowess~. The friendly laid-back culture is eroded by toll roads, state-run lotteries, high taxes, segregation, urban sprawl scarring the land, traffic, corruption, overcrowding, etc, etc.

  Yep, that figures. Hockey is a popular sport in every civilized state or country in the world, except North Carolina ? Ha. Just the hick homey's in N.C. don't like hockey.

  Hartford, CT based ESPN is still bitter about losing it's franchise hockey team...the Whalers, so don't expect anymore than minimum coverage from them. WRAL does the best job of coverage outside of the live game broadcasts for Fox south. It is mystifying why the RALEIGH newspaper does not cover the hometown hockey club better. In addition to the current level of exciting fast-paced play - the Hurricanes themselves have a rich and interesting tradition and history. They are one of the few NHL clubs to ever win both the Stanley cup and the Avco cup when they were in the WHA. You want to establish interest and sell more papers - then write about things sports fans want to read - it would only take alittle digging to turn up some sweet gems ....like the time a beer boycott almost derailed the appearance of the Great One - Gretzky in the NHL - and yes the Whalers did play role in that one too!

  You have to remember that all we've had in this state was for many years was the ACC. Professional sports didn't start until the early nineties. College sports are king and always will be. If you want to grow hockey, the newspaper is not the way to do it. You have to show people the game. I am not the biggest hockey fan but I have been watching quite a few games recently on FSN. It is a great game and it can be as exciting as any of the other sports. Show people the game!! It wouldn't hurt to start a little league of sorts for kids. Start them young, just like they do with the traditional sports.

  Most people here never grew up with hockey. Most love college basketball, football, and the NFL. I prefer the ACC of course. Go Hokies!

  I think there's a bigger issue here regarding the media's "coverage" of all local teams. Our area likes to boast about growth and where we fit in the national media market listing. But there is no competition among the outlets to "break" stories. Yes, they all write about college recruits -- which are the biggest waste of time stories ever written because none of the writers knows/sees any of the athletes recruited and the majority of 5-stars turn out to be average (or it seems arrested or caught cheating/accepting gifts). No one seems to be worried about getting beaten to the punch on stories, especially with the pros, around here. Our market is considered larger than Pittsburgh, yet the media competition there for stories is fierce. If one of the electronic outlets would step up and provide hard news coverage of our teams, it would benefit us fans.

  I think a lot of it has to do with the fact none of the N&O's writers really know jack about hockey. More coverage on the Canes from the N&O isn't going to be beneficial to you. Go to the Canes website. Listen to Chuck Kaiton in the hour before game time. Catch Jon Forslund when he's a guest on the radio and wach Canes Live following the games.
  
  Once April rolls around, and college basketball season is over, and if the Canes are in the playoff hunt, the N&O will amp up their coverage. Happens every year. Until then you just got to deal with the fact we live on Tobacco Road. College sports is king. Always will be. NFL is second. NASCAR is probably third. Maybe not directly in the triangle, but definitely in the surrounding areas the N&O wants to expand.
  
  It's also a problem of a weak economy, lack of advertising revenue, and so writing staffs are getting smaller. Maybe one day the paper will get a real hockey writer to cover the Canes and not some stop-gap they've lifted from another sport. I wouldn't worry about it though. The N&O sucks. You shouldn't support them anyway.

  I hate to break it to you but I doubt the Canes are above NASCAR anywhere in NC. Unfortunately having a Hockey team does not make us a hockey town so until people routinely show up and seek out coverage of the canes, there won't be any unless they are making a run at the cup. BTW isn't it bad enough that the Panthers are on TV every Sunday. Let's not burn another one of our limited outlets for local sports with hockey.

  I think every game should be televised. I live 60 miles away and don't have the change to buy tickets but I am a real fan and would like to see them every night on TV.

  Why isn't there a loud cry from Caniacs regarding coverage of our team? For example, we are the only NHL market where the major newspaper does not devote a full page to NHL coverage once a week. The N&O wastes space on NASCAR and has a Sunday NFL page to go along with the college football and basketball columns. Yet, there is nothing on gameday to preview that night's game and never any weekly NHL news columns. These columns promote the sport and increase the fan base knowledge of the sport around the league. Plus, with the AHL franchise in Charlotte, that would only enhance the coverage because if you really want to know what's happening with the Canes, you need to know the minor league action as well. If the fan base won't loudly complain -- including voicing opinions on the local sports radio stations -- then we will be considered second class behind men's college sports and barely above NASCAR and women's basketball.
