Talladega, Ala. — Four days after a furor over a noose found hanging in the garage assigned to NASCAR's only Black Cup Series driver, officials released a photo of the rope in question.
The noose came to light Sunday as Bubba Wallace prepared to race at Talladega Superspeedway.
By Monday, the FBI was involved, and ultimately determined that the noose was not a hate crime because it had been present long before Wallace was assigned to that garage.
NASCAR said only the garage stall used by Wallace had a pull down rope that resembled a noose.
A Wallace team member discovered the rope tied like a noose and reported it to NASCAR. Wallace did not see it before the uproar and reaction were in full swing.
Once he did, he didn't leave room for doubt.
Wallace said NASCAR President Steve Phelps came to see him Sunday night at the track with “tears running down his face.”
“It was a noose. Whether it was tied in 2019 ... it is a noose,” Wallace said.
