NC State broadcaster Gary Hahn apologized and returned from a two-game suspension for Saturday’s home men's basketball game with Miami.
Hahn was suspended by Learfield Communications, the NC State broadcast rights holder, on Dec. 30 after he gave a score update during the Wolfpack's football’s loss to Maryland in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and said: “Down among all the illegal aliens in El Paso, it’s UCLA 14 and Pittsburgh 6.”
Hahn opened the pregame show for the Miami game on Saturday by thanking Tony Haynes, who handled play-by-play duties in his suspension, and with an apology.
“As for the reason for my absence, the comments I made on Dec. 30 during the Duke's Mayo Bowl were not appropriate in the format of the game broadcast,” Hahn said. “It took focus away from our outstanding student-athletes and it was not my intention to detract from the field of competition or bring any kind of unneeded stress to NC State University.
“I apologize for any issues that this may have caused. I love broadcasting NC State games and it is certainly a privilege for me to be able to continue that."
Hahn, 70, has been calling Wolfpack men’s basketball and football games since 1991.
He missed wins over Duke (Jan. 4) and at Virginia Tech (Jan. 7) while serving his suspension.
