Pitt finally beat NC State.
John Hugley scored 21 points to lead the Panthers to a 71-69 home win over NC State on Saturday. Pitt had lost 11 straight games to the Wolfpack.
That’s how the season has gone for NC State and coach Kevin Keatts, even the things it normally does it can’t. Keatts had a 7-0 mark against Pitt before Saturday.
The loss was the sixth straight for the Wolfpack, which remains in last-place in the ACC standings with a 3-12 record.
Dereon Seabron led the Wolfpack (10-16) with 17 points, all but two came in the second half. After building a 31-26 halftime lead, NC State started the second half ice cold missing 10 of first 12 shots.
The Panthers (10-16, 5-10 ACC) took advantage with Hugley and Jamarius Burton (17 points) leading the charge.
NC State trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half but did come back to take a 60-59 lead with 3:14 left on a layup by Seabron.
The Panthers scored the game’s next six points to make it 65-60. A 3-pointer by Jericole Hellems, with 28 seconds left, cut Pitt’s margin to 65-63.
The Panthers made enough free throws down the stretch to put the game away. Pitt finished 23 of 25 from the free-throw line for its second straight ACC win.
Thomas Allen added 14 points off the bench for NC State. Allen made four 3-pointers.
