NC State falls to No. 1 Purdue in overtime, 82-72

Brooklyn, N.Y. — North Carolina State nearly pulled the upset but fell to No. 1 Purdue in overtime, 82-72, at the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational.
The Wolfpack (7-3) never trailed in regulation after racing out to an 8-0 advantage and led by as many 13 points in the second half. But the Boilermakers finished the half on a 20-8 run to tie the score at 66-66 and send the game to overtime.
Purdue outscored State 16-6 in the extra frame.
Terquavion Smith paced the Pack in scoring with 21 points. Trevion Williams nearly registered a triple-double for Purdue off the bench with 22 points, 12 rebounds and 9 assists.
NC State's last win versus a No. 1 team came against Duke on Jan. 12, 2013.
Purdue (9-1) will still likely drop in next week's AP Top 25 after taking a 70-68 defeat at Rutgers on Thursday.
NC State's next game is on Friday in Charlotte against Richmond.
