I apologize for insinuating that TOB was lying to Glennon.... in fact Russell Wilson states in this article that he would NOT have been given the chance to compete for the starting job...

http://blogs.newsobserver.com/accnow/wilson-torn-up-about-leaving-nc-stateSo TOB is not a liar, however, one must question his sanity. of allowing one of the best players in State history to walk. Mike Glennon, or any athlete for that matter must understand that you are not guranteed a spot on the starting team you must earn it...and if there is competition for the job, then you will HAVE to earn it. If Glennon had transferred, he would have more than likely had to earn a starting spot also.... TOB handled this one wrong

TBK I want you to admit this was a wrong decision based on this ...

    1. TOB would have accepted Wilson back on the team - FACT
    2. Any player on the team should be allowed to compete for a starting job
    3. One of the best players in State history was going to be allowed back on the team but not allowed to compete for a starting job.

State was moving forward with Glennon as their starter, if TOB didn't want Wilson back or thought the whole thing was a distraction he would have closed the door long ago. It is obvious that Wilson made this decision and not TOB, TOB would have made the decision the same day Wilson said he was playing baseball and not sure about football. Handled terribly imho, especially when you are dealing with "Mr NC State" himself Russell Wilson

IMO, this was not handled as well as it should be. However, TOB is not known to have 2 sport stars at QB, probably for this very reason. Russell was great for us and i thank him for all he's done. Now he's gone, and we move on whether we want to or not. Glennon will be ok but not a superstar. He has TOO MUCH arm. He hasn't shown the ablilty to take something OFF the ball to loft it in position when need be. You can't just sit in the pocket and throw 100 mph every play. His foot work will ok but not like Russell. However, the big thing is whether he can move WITHIN the pocket? That can be just as effective as running with the ball.

To be fair Glennon hasn't played yet, so the jury is still out on him, he has a fantastic opportunity to prove himself now. Russell Wilson was a known entity and a very good one imho - there is gonna be a team lucky to get him IF he plays football - which it is sounding more and more that he will.

If TOB didn't want a 2 sport star he should have made that clear as soon as Wilson said he was going to split time between baseball and football last year. I keep saying that TOB would have accepted Wilson back this year - that doesn't lend itself to a coach who doesn't want two sport stars. The error, in my opinion, is that TOB has told Wilson that he wouldn't be able to compete for a starting position - everything in this matter was handled properly EXCEPT for that...and Wilson walked.

RW will be missed. I am as delusional as any state fan, but this will haunt us. You would have to be a fool to think we are better off without him. TOB's biggest priority is to win games. If he doesn't, he loses his job. If he has to go all the way through spring and fall practice without his QB, it hurts his team. I love Russell and I wish him well, but there comes a time when you have to do what you have to do. I am with TOB and Glennon. Go Pack!

hmmmm...is it just me or is this a bigger quarterback controversy than anyone has known about all this time?

I'd be pretty PO'd if I was a state fan. This is Russell Wilson we're talking about, not some mediocre "Paulus"-like second stringer! And I know how good RW is, I sat on those frozen-AZ$ bleachers in Kenan three or so years ago when he handed us a hiney-pillaging (thanks, censors) all day long.

(I'll never forget the two state fans sitting among our SEA of Carolina fans..they were the only two people in that frozen-AZ$ stadium with their gloves off, because they wanted everyone around them to hear their non-stop clapping while we all sat suffering in non-victory.)

Don't know if State will be "better off" without Wilson or not, I think good or bad, right or wrong, everybody owes it to Mike Glennon to give him a chance. The guy has absolutely zero meaningful game experience. He's never had to run a 2:00 drive, he's never had to go for a tying score late in the 4th quarter, nothing. This is not intended as a knock on Coach O'Brien, just an observation that he's been behind one of the better athletes to ever play at State for the last three years.

I do think Tom O'Brien, at least in his mind, had just reached a point where he wanted a definitive answer as to when, if ever, Russell Wilson would be in camp for NC State's football team and when that answer wasn't forthcoming, he placed a call to Russell. He may have not wanted to leave, and Tom O'Brien may not have wanted to get into the summer with a question mark as to when his redshirt senior all-star quarterback was going to be going through training with his teammates, either.

Love Russell Wilson to death, he is an outstanding young man, but Tom O'Brien (in my opinion) just sent a message to everybody on State's football team now as well as in the future and that message is that no one is above the team. NC State football can't afford a Brett Favre prima donna "I might come back, well, I might not, well, I don't know ..." or a Roger Clemens above-the-law "I'll play, but only on this schedule, and I won't show up for spring training, and this, and that ..." situation. In today's world of the pampered, entitled athlete, thank God for Coach Tom O'Brien and his old-fashioned, USMC approach to football - even if it was at the expense of (potentially) Russell Wilson's final year of college eligibility. In the long run, NC State should be just fine, thank you.

I disagree, a lot of the Pack Nation is talking about how TOB had to make a decision, I will say it again TOB made the decision to allow RW to come back...that door was open. The sticking point is whether he would have started or not.

"I really want the fans, N.C. State alumni and most of all my teammates to know if I had been given an equal opportunity to compete for the starting job, I would not have asked for my release," Wilson said Saturday in a telephone interview. "I am a competitor." He said he didnt want to have the starting job handed to him on a silver platter , but wanted an equal chance to compete for it. Wilson said it didnt appear that he would be given that chance.

If Wilson missing the spring practice season made him rusty it would show in practice and he would deserve to be the back up, if he was able to "pick up" where he left off, then State is better off with him. Plain and simple, the decision was made to appease Glennon, to make him stay. TOB didn't need to name Glennon as a starter he is the only one on the roster who could be a starter. Glennon knew that if Wilson returned the Pack nation would expect him to play, so he made the comments about TOB promising him the starting job on media day. What Glennon should have said is "I look forward to starting for the Pack, and I know there has been some talk about Russell Wilson coming back, however, I am confident in my ability to lead the Pack"

Again, we're beating a dead horse. He's gone. We don't make those decisions so all we can do is say thanks, good luck and move on.

From now on, I'm not discussing Russell Wilson. Is he our QB? No. Is he still at NCSU? Until finals are over in the next week or 2. Who's our QB? Mike Glennon.

TOB and the coaches have installed a new offense for Glennon. Wilson would have missed spring AND most of fall practice. H had to make a decision regarding his starter and he did. As a coach, as hard as it seems to do, I would have made the same decision.

Go Pack! Can't wait to tailgate with the Nation!

This could have all been avoided if Russel would have simply stated his intentions of returning as QB long ago. Keeping his entire team in the dark was selfish. He did it 2 years in a row now and it's time to move on. The phrase "sheet" or get off the pot comes to mind. Looks like TOB decided enough is enough. A tough call but the right one for the "team". After all Football is a team sport. To allow one player special privilege is not a good idea.

Not sure how he kept the team in the dark - the team is moving on without him - they are not in the dark.
TOB also said he would be welcomed back - the sticking point is "you are a backup"

If Wilson said he might or will come back in Jan - Glennon would have transferred and you would have been without a QB during spring practice

Or with out a QB at all if Wilson decides baseball is the better option. Tough decision, but ultimately the right one. Wilson is my favorite Wolfpack player of all time, yes, even ahead of Phillip Freakin' Rivers, and as much as I hate that it had to come to this its ultimately whats best. No one player is above the entire team. I see what your motive is here sportznut, but deep down I'm sure you know what I am saying is true.

Strange to see everyone anointing Glennon as their new savior at QB and how quickly they sweep Wilson under the rug and fail to really even scrutinize the decision by TOB to force Wilson to xfer if he wants play another year of college football as a starter.

Reminds me of the stratospheric high hopes the Duke fans have already laid on their incoming freshman ( un-tested in the ACC) basketball recruits.

Wilson is a very good QB and worthy of extra consideration outside of normal circumstance. He should be given the benefit of the doubt - he has earned it - Glennon has not.

A fair deal would be to allow Wilson to at least come back and compete for his starting job again not to be automatically regulated to the bench.

This could go sour for State very soon if Glennon proves to be an interception machine or can't reliably connect with anyone. Other than his arm and unknown football IQ, he really doesn't have anything else going for him. I doubt if TOB's confidence in Glennon will win games, only his production will.

"Life" is not "simple", and this situation has some complexities to it... but, the "bottom line" centers around who is "in charge" - the coach or a player. Unless we are willing to dramatically change the dynamic between coach and player in sport - the coach MUST be "in charge". Although not an NCSU fan I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing Wilson play QB... He is GOOD and he is EXCITING! Nevertheless, if I were coach (and I have coached multiple sports) I could NOT allow a player to keep me and my entire team "hanging". IMO... O'Brien did what he had to do... and it was the right thing to do. We can never allow a player or players to dictate to a coach.

Why does everyone keep saying TOB made a decision? TOB's decision was to allow Wilson to return as a back up - that was his decision . Russell Wilson decided to cut ties. And in the end guaranteeing a starting spot to any player is not healthy for any team. BTW there are many fans on Pack pride that agree with my thinking - however it is a dead horse now - good luck to State their fb schedule has three guaranteed wins on it already. Cent mich , liberty and south ala. - looks like they will have a decent yr no matter who plays QB

I see your point about TOB did not make a decision that Wilson was not coming back; however, my point was that TOB made a decision to "make" Wilson make a decision; i.e., while I don't like the word in this instance, for all practical purposes I think he gave Russell an ultimatum. Sort of along the lines of "Commit to me 'right now' that you will be back by (as an example) July 15 to begin fall training with your teammates ("pay his dues"). If you can't, we need to move on without you."

That way, at least it's technically a "mutual" decision. I know, realize, and believe Russell Wilson is one of the best athletes, particularly quarterbacks, to ever play at NC State. That being said, I will echo Objective Scientist's post above: a coach can never allow a player to dictate what the course of the team will be. With that in mind, Tom O'Brien unquestionably made a decision. A decision to tell Russell Wilson to sh!t or get off the pot (sorry if people don't like that analogy, but it fits here).

  • Ken D. May 1, 2011

I would have to agree. If both these QBs had similar skill sets, and the offense would be pretty much the same no matter which one was in the game, TOB's need for a commitment from Wilson wouldn't be so great. But they don't, and he couldn't have his entire offense spend both spring and fall practice preparing for one offense and then scrap it all at the last minute.

I'm disappointed in Wilson for the way he has handled this, and for the way he has now tried to undermine TOB who has been more than accommodating. Wilson is a good quarterback, but I think State fans have exaggerated how good he is. And I think Wilson has let fan comments on message boards and forums like this one convince him he has a bright future in the NFL. If he had put his name in this year's draft, I don't think it would have been a sure thing he'd have been picked.

I think TOB made the right call under the circumstances.

I'm with you on the 'if the QBs had similar skill sets' perspective.

Regarding disappointment, I wonder if Wilson has been getting sound advice related to his strong desire to play both sports professionally. One must admire his confidence but maybe that kept him from realizing the logical repercussions of dragging out any commitment to TOB.

As a college QB, the guy was outstanding...but we all know the NFL game is very, very different. Then again, his skill set would seem to translate well to the wide open passing game of the CFL.

Bottom-line, Russell did what he thought he needed to do (good advise or no) and TOB made the right decision for the right reasons.

I'll meet you halfway on this. Thanks for manning up, though. :)

If Russell would be allowed to return, then he should have been allowed to compete equally for the job. I was surprised to hear him say he would not have had the chance. I still question how true that was. But I have to assume it is. I don't think Russell would lie about this.

But at the same time, TOB was in a bad spot. He couldn't leave the door wide open, not even knowing if Russell would return or not. Because we'd have (possibly) lost Glennon. And if we lose Glennon, then Russell does not return, we're down to a couple of QB's with almost no experience. I think this was a game of chicken, and TOB wanted something more committal from Russell. Basically, if you're coming back, tell me now and/or come back now (in the Spring).

The haters at SFN even agree with TOB on this, for the most part. You know if THEY agree with TOB on this, there must be something to it.

I think it boils down to being too much of a risk that could have resulted with NO GLENNON and NO RUSSELL. TOB is a conservative guy. This can be viewed as him not being willing to risk Glennon since he could end up with neither.

Good points, Ken, including the big one about Wilson not being as good as people think. He is pretty great, but he wasn't perfect this year. He threw some bad passes and interceptions with the game on the line some this year. And I remember a few that were thrown into double coverage that he was lucky to not be intercepted.

I get that train of thought, however, NC State has no options at this point but to name Glennon the starter, because Russell Wilson is undecided. This boils down to TOB naming Glennon the starter for the whole season - TOB has not refuted that it was for the whole year. There isn't a coach in college sports that would guarantee a starting spot to a player for the whole year.

You and I both know that if Wilson was sitting on that sideline and the Pack was struggling that the Pack Nation would be going bezerk for Wilson to play, they wouldn't back TOB at all. I think TOB could have handled this much better - seeing Russell Wilson basically saying I would have come back if.....well you know

No, because I don't think TOB had a choice in how to play this one.

I already believe this year is the year that leads up to next year. Glennon probably won't be an all-star this year. He has to get some experience under his belt. I think that's what this year is about.

Someone made a good point earlier, saying Russell ran for over 20 yards on 3rd and 19 against Carolina, and that Glennon won't be doing that for us this year. That's true. There are going to be times when we miss Russell's legs. But Russell also threw a few ill-advised passes into double coverage that got intercepted this year. He was intercepted twice inside the 10 yard line (one against FSU and one in overtime at ECU that cost us the game). Maybe that's where we'll LIKE Glennon.

Will disagree with Russell's assertion that he wouldn't be given a fair chance to compete for the starting QB spot. He passed on his fair chance to compete by not reporting to spring practice with the rest of the team. Therefore, Russell Wilson made the decision to not be State's quarterback.

True that Marty, and as coach you cannot have a player running the team or making the decisions for the team. The Marine did what he needed to do for the good of the outfit. RW had to know that TOB could not sit Glennon and his loyalty with RW treating the State football team like a booty call. If he did not know, he does now. I really like RW but TOB wanted a commitment that RW was not prepared to give.

BTW, there was a bozo named "Carl" that called in to Gold/Ovies show today and stated that TOB was a "coward" for taking RWs right away to compete for the position, like his civil rights had been violated. If the coach allows the player to come back then the player should be allowed to compete for the starting job - it is that simple. If the coach gave an ultimatum it SHOULD have been right before Wilson signed on the dotted line for baseball. When Wilson signed the baseball contract, all bets were off for his football career. He was very fortunate that he was allowed to play football by the Rockies last year. They made it clear that he would play a full season this year. He made this choice to sign a baseball contract. That was his mistake! He could continued doing both in college, but this is what happens when you don't think things through. TOB is doing exactly what he's supposed to do. Look out for the football teams best interest now and in the future. This guy is asking for more special treatment and you cannot allow that. He was told if he did not attend spring practice, he would not start, period. TOB did not back down! Good for him! Right decision! Wilson should have stuck to football, that's where his future is, but maybe he can find the right situation. He'll never be as good as he could have been, because he must dedicate himself to one or the other. He'll figure it out at some point.

This is not an incident! It's simply two people's judgement on what's best for all involved. Wilson was good and now he plays baseball. Glennon will not struggle and if he does, it's better this year than next. TOB is the coach and he's right. If Wilson does not participate in all practices(Spring and Fall) he should not be given a chance to start, period. That is a wise coaching decision and it sends a clear message to all players. Be here or be a back up. Zarzour is the one out of touch! It's called integrety or something like that. More coaches around here should have some. I got a chance to meet RW after the champs bowl, he is the definition of a class act. Glennon may become a star. RW already is a star. It is that simple......By adambrock

As a Carolina fan, I wish that he had left year before last. Glennon may turn out to be a good QB, but he will not be a Russell Wilson.....as we will all find out soon enough.

MG's the Pack's new (more than capable) leader.

He's been groomed for this very thing. I have a feeling non Pack fans are going to wind up wishing RW had come back.

I'm excited about how good their D's going to be... It aint easy to block JR Sweezy :)

So, are you saying that experience counts for nothing. The "D" may be good, but if you don't score on "O" what does that translate into? Carolina has a good "D" returning, but the offense is inexperienced and is still a huge question mark.
