Panthers defeat Buffalo Bills 21-0 in final preseason game

FOURTH QUARTER/FINAL: The Carolina Panthers beat the Buffalo Bills 21-0. Panther's top performers were Baker Mayfield who went 9-15 with 89 yards and 2 touchdowns, and John Lovett who led the team in rushing and receiving yards had 35 yards rushing and 36 receiving. John Lovett caught all four targets. The Panthers ended their final preseason game tonight and start the regular season against the Cleveland Browns on September 11th.

THIRD QUARTER: 12:11 into the third quarter, the Panthers stop the Bills on fourth down with a sack on Buffalo's Matt Barkley. 7:00 minutes, Sam Darnold shows his wheels and runs towards the left side of the end zone outrunning the Buffalo defender for a touchdown, Panthers lead 21-0 with a good PAT by John Hekker.

Injury update: Panthers Kicker Zane Gonzales tweaked his leg while warming up on the sideline. He was carted to the locker room. He is listed as questionable to return to tonights game.

- Sam Darnold was carted off the field due to his ankle being rolled on while throwing a pass. Injury occurred on the Panthers 4th possession of the quarter. 

HALFTIME: Panthers lead the Buffalo Bills 14-0 with 125 yards of total offense and 2 touchdown passes from Baker Mayfield.

SECOND QUARTER: The Panthers started the second quarter hot. Two minutes into the second quarter Case Keenum's pass was tipped by Yetur Gross-Matos and intercepted by Carolina's Jeremy Chinn. At 12:09, following the interception, Baker Mayfield passed to Shi Smith for a 19-yard touchdown with a good PAT giving them a 14-0 lead.

FIRST QUARTER: Baker Mayfield capped a scoring drive that oncluding 21-yard and 15-yard passes with a fourth-down two-yarder to D'Onta Foreman for a touchdown to put the home team up 7-0 in the first.

PREGAME: The Carolina Panthers are set to wrap up their preseason Friday night in a home game against the Buffalo Bills.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET at Bank of America Stadium.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said to expect to see the team’s starters for at least a full quarter against the Bills.

Quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold did not play in the Panthers’ second preseason game on Aug. 19 against the New England Patriots.

Mayfield is set to start the Panthers’ regular-season opener on Sept. 11 against the Cleveland Browns, his former team.

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said quarterback Josh Allen will not play against the Panthers. On Wednesday, McDermott said “most” starters aren’t going to play either.

Both teams must finalize their 53-man rosters by Aug. 30.

Last season, the Bills defeated the Panthers, 31-14, in Week 15.
