    After watching SB 51, got me to thinking about some stuff;

NFL QB - #12 in NE, Coach - Bill Belichick, WR - Jerry Rice, RB - Emmitt Smith (would have been nice to see how Barry Sanders would have done in Big D - never had a season under 1000 yds), best LB - Jack Lambert

NBA - best player - Michael Jeffrey Jordan, best coach - Phil Jackson

MLB - best hitter - tough call - Cobb, Ruth, Williams, Bonds, Aaron, etc.
Not up for debate - best 3B of all-time - Captain Clutch George Brett

Boxing - best - Ali, Marciano, Louis, Dempsey, Leonard, Duran, Manny, Hagler, Hearns, Chavez, Big George just to name some.
Would have been interesting to see Iron Mike against anybody in his prime. Loads of power in those heavy hands & a 'tude to go with it.

Hockey - Gunny, you wanna take this?...I'll say The Great One

    Best athlete - Bo

Golf - easy enough - Jack & Tiger

Robinson definitely had one of the best gloves ever. He wasn't the hitter Brett was but a great third baseman and easily one of the best ever (16 gold gloves).

Pistol Pete was an exceptional player. Too bad the knees cut his career short. Averaged 24 pts a game for his career & scored 40 or more 35 times...amazing. Impressive that he averaged 44 pts a game in college while leading the NCAA in scoring 3 times.

    Great topic, B!

Hard to argue that "The Great One" is the greatest in the NHL.
Best College B Ball Player - David Thompson, although arguments made for several others, like Lew Alcindor (Kareen Abdul-Jabbar)
Best NBA Player - - MJ
Best NBA Coach Phil Jackson (but he also gets WORST for what he's doing to the Knicks now, albeit in a different role!)
NFL - Can't argue about your choices in the Evil Empire - Brady/Belichick
Bo Jackson? Sure had potential, heartbreaking injury to his hip derailed a brilliant duel career. Bo Knows!!!
Boxing - No arguing Ali Golf - Jack

Pistol Pete! How fortunate are we to have had him play his HS here in Raleigh???

Thanks Gunny.....there have been a lot of great players you could make a case for. I generally look at their individual accomplishments & championships, see who stood at the top more than the rest. DT was a special player for sure. Speaking of Pistol Pete, a couple of his family members have Campbell U. connections...small world.

You definitely did your homework with naming all the bests. Meant to say it's hard to argue that The Great One "isn't" the best, because while there have been many remarkable players in the NHL, Gretsky stands out.

Heard a funny story about Gretsky: he and his wife were having dinner with Shaq and his wife at Shaq's house. Gretsky's wife asks, "Will the great one pass the salt?" So Gretsky reaches for the salt when this big paw reaches over him saying, "In this house, I'M the great one!"

I've always liked the Big Man. Great sense of humor and easy to pull for a player like that. Pretty good player as well in his day.

Greatest hoops coach - K.....sorry about that Gunny...lol

    Nascar - #3 - he earned it.

Greatest pitcher - tough call but Nolan & The Big Unit were very intimidating. Nasty stuff! Ryan threw 7 no-nos.

No argument about greatest college b ball coach. K works with the talent he has, while Roy is stubborn and has tried to make a square peg fit in a round hole at times. K is also a better game day x and o coach. It's a tiresome topic, but Roy hangs onto those TO's to the detriment of his team at time. Dean held on to them as well (I know the argument that he actually saved - and used them - for end of game situations), but I believe in getting the team back on track before things totally unravel. Hard to argue with Roy's success, though. He reached 800 wins at an incredible pace, and he's in the HOF for a reason. There's no one I'd rather see (dadgumit!) on the Carolina bench than 'Ol Roy.

Agree with a lot of your picks B. K is a great coach, but my Dad has drilled in me Wooden. Everyone says Wooden had Alcindor and Walton, but I did some research and UCLA won some titles without Walton/Alcindor. They beat a Charlie Scott led UNC in a final four with players I never heard of except for Goodrich.
Baseball I would go with the Say Hey Kid.
    Basketball MJ.
    Football Jim Brown.
NFL coach Belichick, Coach has won 5 SB's with one Hall of famer, but Chuck Knoll is right there. How many Hall Of Famers did he draft?
    CB David Thompson.
The best athlete BO Jackson witn Deion Sanders second. really think Deion could have really been special if he played just baseball. Sorry Gunny I fell asleep and woke up a few times during the UNC/Duke game. LOL. I have never been interested in a game that I want both teams to lose. LOL. I was ready for the UCLA/Oregon game.

Oh yeah B speaking of clutch Brett was a clutch player, but I think Jeter was right there also.

Agree 100%....Jeter would be my all-time SS, Brett at the hot corner, Will the Thrill at 1B (very clutch & intense until the injuries derailed him), Sandberg at 2B although Kent would be a strong choice. Kent is the most underrated second baseman ever, imo.

Wooden would have to be mentioned in there, Mays is obviously one of the all-time greats. I always liked Puckett in Minnesota (a gamer & great player to have). If I had to pick the greatest baseball player ever, going with Ted Williams (.344 career BA - hit .400, missed prime years due to the war). Lots of great players who impacted the game in a big way.

  • Toddler10-21 Feb 11, 2017

Yeah Ted could hit it with power and average. Ken Griffy Jr also was a great player.

Liked Puckett also along with Bonds. Dude was one of the greatest without the cheating.

Oh yes- Jeter. One of the best - and classiest - to ever play. Loved the tributes to him - like Billy Crystal, etc. Plus, sorry, as a female - love me some Jeter.
