I don't think he was drafted, so maybe he's going to play in Europe, or whatever they call the "D League" these days.

Kapita is gone? I didn't know that. He was tough for sure.

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 22, 2017
    Bench Warmer

CJ Leslie was as talented a player that Gott had, do not think Gott could communicate with him, yes I think that was a big time mistake by UNC-Char, the one player I think suffered under Gott was Cat Barber-I actually liked Cat better that Dennis Smith-I know lots of Pack fans will not agree, Dennis surely was very talented but it was easy to see he was setting himself for the Pro's, the two players that will be missed is Ted Kapita and Mav Rowan but looking at the bright side it will give some of the younger players a chance to play.

  • StunGunn Aug 21, 2017
    Sports Legend

I think Gott may have been threatened by Bobby's talent - he was/is a good coach that was fired when he shouldn't have been, and I think UNC-Charlotte regretted letting him go. He and Gott may have clashed, and State "promoted" him into another position. Gott definitely seemed to favor some players. Remember the whole "CJ"/"Calvin" thing? CJ was who he was, and Gott calling him "Clavin" didn't change anything.

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 20, 2017
    Bench Warmer

i think Gotts biggest problem was he tried to friends with some players and not others, thus why so many transfers, the twins, Kyle W. and several others there was at least 2 each year, still think Bobby had a lot to do with the success, some good talent left State early.
Keatts is a young coach with fresh ideas, hope it translate into some W's

I think Keats was a good hire for the Pack. Would love to know what went on behind closed doors with Gott. It seemed he could coach, but played favorites too much, and other guys resented it. The fact that some guys stuck around, like Abu, who had one Nike out the door, tells me Keats has a good relationship with the players.

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 20, 2017
    Bench Warmer

yea hope Keatts has a decent year, seems to have a lot of energy, I think Markell Johnson will blossom this year, last year he had to play 2nd fiddle to Dennis Smith but am thinking he will a more complete player, think this team may not be flashy to start with but wil get better as the progresses!

  • Toddler10-21 Aug 19, 2017

I'm hoping Keatts can bring the Pack back also.

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 19, 2017

I am like a lot of Pack fans hoping this is the year we can get to that 9 win level and progress forward, Doeran must be doing something right, a lot of those guys on the defense are his first or second year recruits and are turning out to be pretty darn good.

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 19, 2017
    Bench Warmer

not buying into Capel as a great recruiter, not a big K fan but he has builtDuke BB into a household name although Duke has always had academic integrity. With the help of BOG the pack has had an uphill battle since Valvano was let go. State was forced into hiring Les (personally a great guy) but was not a top level coach, then hired a young Herb but after a few years it was easy to tell his ceiling had been reached. The ESPN's of the world had a grudge over when V was let go and then Herb was let go and we were branded as a bad hire. I am hoping K.Keatts can get us over the hump and back to our place in college BB. Just my (too early sat. morning)2 cents.

  • Toddler10-21 Aug 19, 2017
    Sports Legend

You got that right Max. I think the four letters across their chest says it all. I know a lot of Duke BASKETBALL fans that say Capel is the best recruiter in the country because they are getting top players now. My question to them is, "Who did Capel recruit while at Oklahoma besides Blake Griffin"? CRICKETS!!!!! K feels he has to have the tops recruits now to compete. The old system doesn't work anymore. My opinion UNC won because of the old K system by winning with Vet players!!
I think Jackson will have a even better year this year, but he better put on some weight for the NFL!

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 18, 2017

I saw an article in sports-headlines says will a long shot prevail in the heisman for third straight-
when the season begins, all players should be equal at the beginning of season but the sportswriter are always trying to look ahead, I believe Jackson at Louisville will not have the year he had last year, Watson is in the pro's, one great game and a guy is front runner, one bad game and he is out just depends when that great or bad game is played if late in the season it could hurt or help, I believe a players whole body of work should be considered-just my 2 cents

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 17, 2017
    Bench Warmer

Richard Howell was the ultimate blue collar workhorse, that guy worked his buut off every second he was in the game, i think Lennard Freeman will be that same kind of player-David was a special player, he had more natural ability than anyone that played in the ACC-he was so smooth and did it effortlessly Ted Brown was also one of my favorites, I believe it was against Indiana, Holtz was not satisfied with some of the play and started some frosh against them and Brown was one of them, had he started all the games his frosh year, probably would have been over 5000 yds for career both were local products! 2 weeks from tonight it all starts!

Chuck was a great recruiter but his downfall he was a control freak-he had good assistants but also had a high turnover in assistants-I personally liked Norm Chow as OC and Reggie Herring as DC -Mario seem like a good dude, it was a shame that he got screwed over by that chick. down east has been good the Pack, Mario Williams, Nate Irving and Andre Brown probably a few more!!

on another note-after Chubb leaves I think its time to retire Mario's number but on the other hand it does seem to bring out the best in the person wearing it, think it is designated to a player who gives effort on the defensive line. Hope Chubb has an outstanding year, he seems like a pretty good kid!

That will be fun, Max and T. Hope Bishop finds us here - he always has something good and entertaining to add.

Saw where Trubisky had a very good first game for Chicago. Feel bad for Glennon, but Foxy said he was keeping Glennon as second string and Trubisky as third.

I love the college game and can't wait, got some great opening games-FSU -Ala. could put someone on the verge of elimination early( hope its Alabama) Talk to some of the Pack guys Sunday while getting autographs for my god-son, they said they are ready -Chubb, man that guy looks in great shape, this hopefully will be a great year for the Pack, can't handle another disappointing year, if so its Dorean last.

Yeah the 3 on 3 tourney is just a bunch of old NBA players. Charles Oakley is coaching one of the teams. McCants looked over weight, but could still shoot it.
I have a coworker that's a Mets fan. he gives it too me when the Yankees lose. All I say is 1986 is a long time ago. That team had so much talent. Should have won multiple series.

    Toddler!!! Long time no post!!

No mercy for you pulling out your hair about your Yankees - I'm a Mets fan - or should I say "Mess" fan. What a dumpster fire this year. I had no idea Judge's performance has tanked since the home run derby. Guy is amazing - hope he returns to pre derby form.

McCants raining 3's? He's such a waste of talent. Bad 'tude won't get him far.

Didn't catch the 30 for 30, but hope to see it soon.

    I wouldn't mind seeing T J Graham in a Panthers uniform!

Greg Olsen didn't seem happy last night during the sideline interview. Hope he's not still mad about the $$$ thinking he was underpaid.

    So glad football is here!

What's going on Max and Gunny? I would like to see TJ Graham make the panthers roster because he is a State guy and I went to college with his parents.
My Steelers--- Bell turning down 4 years 50 million? Sign the 12 million tag and get paid next year like AB. You know you are going to sign it so holding out is pointless.
Bryant was reinstated for preseason and practice, but not the regular season (yesterday), but has completed all requirements! Explain???
Good thing I'm bald because my Yankees are pulling out my hair!! Never was a fan of the home run derby. Judge is hitting .160 since then.
Lebron, Curry and Kyrie are acting like little kids!!
Anyone see the Baltimore Boys on 30 for 30? Mugsy Bouges, David Wingate, Reggie Williams, and the late Reggie Lewis?
Gunny I was watching the 3 on 3 tourney and I saw UNC favorite Rashard Mccants raining 3's! LOL!!

I hate the Buzzards, Cowgirls, and Pats!!!!

I think Dorean is kind of misunderstood, he is a blue-collar kind of guy, wears emotions on his sleeve, myself am a blue-collar person/ served in the miitary/ self-made/ never went to collage but took many courses on a plethora of different interest over the years, I think a degree gets you in some doors quicker but then you have to make the best of the opportunity, some fail at this in life. with the exception of O'Cain I have liked all of the Packs coaches, some had their faults and let it doom them in the in. Dick Sheridan was my all time favorite, he and Holtz were no nonsense guys- I forgot about the General Tom Reed-he was just over his head!

in next couple of weeks we'll fire up prediction thread-my outlook for the Coastal-everybody is in love with Miami and they will be good but do not count out Va Tech, Duke and Virginia should contend for the bottom-GT, UNC, Pitt will be in the middle, my preditions are 1-VT 2- Miami 3-GT, 4-Pitt 5-UNC 6-Duke 7-Virginia-1 and 2 could flip flop- 6and 7 could flip flop-3-4-5 is just a group of 3 (went alphabetical on those) one of those may surprise-that is official -but I believe one will be a surprise-watched a lot of predictions on you tube, the hype is on G.T.
the Atlantic-most are predicting FSU,Clemson,Louisville, NCSU-1-2-3-4, some saying pack will finish 7-5, many say 8-4 and a few are going are 9-3, Wake Syracuse, BC to finish 5-6-7 my prediction-1-FSU 2-Clemson/NCSU tied 4-Louisville (possibly a 3 way tie) 5-Wake 6-Syracuse, 7-BC, hoping Pack can do that good-

We need to do our W/L predictions for the ACC teams. Maybe start a new thread. I have an idea for the Triangle schools, but will have to look at the schedules to get a better idea. Early thoughts - Carolina maybe 6 wins, but not sure there will be that many. State - at least 8 wins, maybe more. Duke should get at least 6 wins and a bowl bid this year, after missing last year.

  • StunGunn Aug 4, 2017
    Sports Legend

Agree with your assessment of the ACC coaches. Duke hit the jackpot with Cutcliff - he turned that program around, but like you said, there's only so much you can do at Duke. Ditto WF and BC - the schools where academics are more stringent. Fedora underachieved last year, and I wonder what really happened with Chizk. I think the Hat will be gone when he gets an offer he can't refuse. I don't like Doeren - he whines too much, but he has a good, experienced team this year, and State should do well. I think Kelly is gone, maybe even before the season is over, unless ND has a surprisingly good season. Don't see that happening. I like Dabo a lot. Man overcame so much in his personal life, stood in the shadow of Tommy Bowden, and ended up having a lot more success than Bowden. Jimbo is good, but I agree Dabo is better. Petrino is doing a good job at L'Ville. All in all, the ACC is getting some respect as a football conference, but not like the SEC. Let the games begin!

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 4, 2017
    Bench Warmer

north of the Big 4 -Va. Tech and Virginia have fairly new coaches that are proven but still are in the building stages Fuente and Mendenhall the jury is still out, Pitt's Narduzzi could turn out well for Panthers, has a good pedigree-same goes for BC coach Addazio but only so much you can do at BC, Syracuse coach Dino Baber off to a rough start can he shake the rust off and get Orange moving and that leaves Petrino at Louisville probably is at the top coach of the northern part of the ACC- we will throw in ND's Kelly unless the Irish rise in the next year or two he is out.

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 3, 2017
    Bench Warmer

sometimes it more than just wins and losses, head scratching play calling, time outs at the wrong time, missed opprtunities sometimes enters the equation, I liked Tom O'Brien but it was easy to see, his ceiling was 8-4, 9-3 kind of coach, everybody is looking for that coach with no ceiling but there are very few around, I think Les Miles is as close you can get other than the obvious ones, Dabo has been a diamond in the rough, Jimbo is a darn good coach but I think Dabo is better. Think in the next year or two Paul Johnson is gone at Tech, Fedora and Dorean I think are ceiling guys we just don't what their ceiling is. As good a coach as Cutcliffe is there is only so much you can do at Duke, I think he will ride it out until retirement, Richt at Miami is solid but not a higher echelon coach WF is like Duke a place to climb the latter or retire-that's it for the Carolinias and south.

I definitely have my thoughts and opinion, but I'm no football expert. But, hey, we can have our fun. You can write about your 'Skins and I'll write about the Panthers. I tend to be more critical of the teams I like, probably because I watch them more and see their flaws. If Bishop comes back, he can add something into the mix. I don't remember if he's a 'Skins fan, but I think he might be.

As for your Pack, I've heard a lot of buzz about them being a "sleeper" this year. My gut tells me this will be a very good year for them, unless they're plagued by injuries. You know I'm a Heels fan. This will be a tough year for them, as they lost so much talent, especially on offense. That said, last year, they definitely underachieved. All that talent, and look at their record and how they ended the year. Beating Carolina definitely helped Doeren keep his job, as did winning their bowl. Football is back! HOF game is on tonight!

well I hope my skins can do good this year-Panthers have backtracked since the SB, think it was one of those season where everything just fell in place, they were a good team probably a solid 12-4 team, this year they have some missing pieces of a big puzzle, still think they have a winning season, I have sentimental favorites over the years-have always liked the browns because of their fan loyalty and Cleveland is a blue collar city-like it when GB and Pitt. are good, withstand Rodgers-teams I dislike SF, Dallas, Balt. N.E. the rest kind 0f just let the chips fall-would love for San Diego-I mean Chargers do good for Phillip, he is on his final years

Unfortunately, The Panthers have made Cam the face of their franchise and have hung all their hopes on him. He is a physical freak, but his physical skills can't compensate for his mental ability. I'm not a Cam hater by any means, but I see a difference between him and a lot of the other QB's. SB 50 was a golden opportunity the Panthers squandered. I don't see another chance at the SB in the foreseeable future.

  • Maxwell Silver III Aug 1, 2017

no confidence in Panthers-think Cam Newton super bowl year may have been the exception, when he gets his head screwed on right maybe they get better- Newton is all about flash-making cute comments to the media-and when things don't go right for him, he sulks think its almost time to look to get something for him and look for another QB-maybe I'm wrong but just don't have any confidence in him or the organization!!
