Healthy players skipping their bowl games because of the NFL draft. Are you kidding me? If a player chooses to blow off their bowl game when they are clearly capable of playing, they should not be attending said bowl game with their teammates just to stand around and offer phony support. Whatta joke!

Saw an Oregon player giving his team a pep talk prior to their bowl game with Boise. This particular player could have played but chose not to due to the draft, but had the nerve to try & give an inspirational talk prior to the game. Made me laugh all afternoon. Silliness at it's best.

    I can hear it now.....

"Go get 'em, fellas! I'll be right here, ya know, by the bench, as I cheer you on. Gotcha back!"

    Good Lord!

Agree that any player who chooses not to play should NOT attend the bowl. I can see the "other side" though, in that they're risking their future livelihood, should they suffer a serious injury, and that does happen. Tough decision for some players. Unfortunately, this further waters down the bowls. There are already a lot of bowls with bad teams, now even good teams are missing their star players in their bowls. I'm glad this hasn't spilled over into college basketball! Yet.

I'm seriously getting to a point where I'm just going to stop watching D-1 football. Between the playoff stuff, players skipping bowl games when healthy, etc., there's only so much silliness I can stand in one sport. Geez!

I agree, but the positives out weight the negatives I will still watch college football esp local teams and ACC teams, I am slowly but surely becoming a FCS fan- shame they don't get coverage unless they are playing a power 5 team

I respect your point of view, B. And I would bet my last dollar you live what you preach. Much respect, B.

I agree B, but that goes to show that the last four are the only ones that matter. They wouldn't sit out on them. Hope State wins and I can care less about the other 50 except for the final four!

guess I am just a college junkie esp. Football- don't care about NBA, NHL and NFL, reving up to see FAU play Akron-less than 3 weeks there will no college FB for 8 months, gonna OD the next 3 weeks, I am looking forward to the ND State/JMU game saturday.

Lot of truth in that, Max (positives vs negatives). I've been following the FCS in recent years due to the playoff format. Really enjoy watching them go at it. NDS has beaten a few D-1s over the years.

Thanks, Gunny, but I can be just as full of it as the next person....lol.

Much respect to you, Gunny, and I respect your point of view as well. You know your stuff. :)

Serious things have to happen for me to stop watching. Ex. MLB strike years ago...

Agree 100%, T! Going with the Pack in that one. Hope they get it done & rep the ACC well.

Nothing wrong with that, Max. Have to admit, I don't follow MLB like I used to. I'll check in at the beginning (spring training), around the All-Star break, & start checking the standings about 30 days out, etc. Still watch the playoffs though. Don't really follow the NBA or the NHL.......very casual with that. I'll watch but not enough to really say I'm a "fan". Follow UFC stuff, Nascar, etc. The Olympics are coming soon & I'll watch that.

  • Maxwell Silver III Dec 20, 2017

i will watch UFC and Nascar-wish nascar would quit changing the rules every year- figure out a way to get the top 10 in the chase and be done with it, dividing each race into sections and have a winner each section-they say they do it because of the millenials, they better start concentrate on pleasing the fans that have always been there or they lose them, once that happens they will keep going downhill. Nascar made a move years ago to go west and north and build tracks all over-they were a hit at first but the novelty has worn off-they deserted tracks that had always been great tracks-(Rockingham-North Wilksboro) the latest France has virtually sold the true fan out and it may come back to bite him-Bill France Sr. built nascar and Brian France may be the one to take it down.-just 2 cents

College basketball is my favorite, followed by college football. I'd watch more sports, but I totally OD on them during March Madness. I do remember one day about five years ago when I watched State, Carolina, and Duke football games. It was 12 hours of football. Then there was the ACC tournament game between State and Carolina in 2012. What a classic! Went on past 1 am. I was blogging with some State and Carolina fans on this site. We were bleary eyed, but couldn't stop until it was over - 18 innings, I believe. Carolina won, and then played in the championship game the next day (or really that same day, since the game ended after midnight) and won.

I used to catch all the State, Carolina and Duke ball games. Now I pick and choose, but do watch most all of the Carolina games.

B - how far did you go in your baseball career?

  • Toddler10-21 Dec 20, 2017

NFL, MLB, College Basketball especially March Madness. NBA, College Football. I would rather watch the D 2 and 3 playoffs than any of the 50 bowl games with there 6-6 records. Just give me the final four. Really enjoyed NC A@T/ Grambling. A@T went undefeated, but it doesn't seem to matter much even in NC.

I remember that State/Carolina game that went 18. Lotta pitching and very little hitting that night. I still follow MLB (refuse to get the package though), watch football mostly (college over NFL), enjoy ACC hoops also, Nascar, MMA, etc.

Your question - played through college, some semi-pro stuff after that (has-beens & wannabes), adult league stuff for fun. Had fun playing and was fortunate to play with good players.

MLB watch my first game in the seventies - it was relaxing and exciting at the same time-saw Bob Horner hit 4 HR's in a game, each one was hit in the same spot in Fulton County Stadium, love to watch Greg Maddox pitch-

Yep....I'd say 3 or 4 given the run they had. Choke...?

Maddox was methodical the way he pitched-his strike to ball ratio was insane, that little cutter he had would freeze batters-when he was on -none better, with his stoic manner on the mound hard to believe was a cutup in club house.

LOL.....Was listening to John Smoltz one night and he even said they should have won more. The Braves and the 80's A's just didn't get it done given their overall talent, opportunities, etc. Baseball is a different game but when you get that many opportunities with that kind of talent, the expectation is that you win multiple rings. Is what it is. The Braves & A's will always be referred to as underachievers. Saw an interview with Dave Stewart (great arm also) & he touched on that as well. With that said, baseball is funny like that. Baseball can be a very humbling sport but when you're riding high, there is no greater feeling, imo.

Yankees are loaded. Having Judge & Stanton in the same lineup should produce some serious fireworks. Hellacious thunder in the heart of the order. Yankees are gonna be tough. K's could be a concern though.

Maddox didn't blow heaters by hitters. Very smart, great control of his pitches (location), excellent movement, etc. Could hit corners, jam hitters, and was in complete control during his prime. Used his sinker & change a lot while throwing cutters/sliders, etc. I just remember him having tremendous movement/control with whatever he was throwing, which was very frustrating for opposing hitters.

Weakest part of the Yankee lineup last year was the DH, I think that problem is solved. Looking forward to Gelybar Torres 2nd/SS from the minors. he was about to get called up last year before he got injured.
A's Rickey Henderson, Dave Henderson, Dave Parker, Canseco, McGuire, Tony Phillips, Walt Weis, Brouis, Steinbach, Dave Stewart, Bob Welch, Darling, and Eck. SMH!!
