I'm always sad to see basketball season over. It's my favorite sport. I don't watch baseball or golf. I'll watch some hockey if the Canes advance.
Butch was the fall guy for the cheating that went on. Carolina got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Butch was brought in to 'win baby" and don't worry about winning the "right" way. With all the cheating, Butch didn't do that well. I hate that Thorpe got caught up in the mess. He was interested in academics and trusted Baddour to do his job. Baddour deserved to get fired. He was complicit with all that went on.
I'm glad that Bacot is coming back. I'm surprised - I thought he'd be in the portal.

In this day in age, it's a different ballgame (pun intended) you gotta keep some happy or they are gone, with the stroke of a pen and or NIL it's off to greener pastures, I'm on some forums (Pack) football or basketball 1 loss some go absolutely bananas, I'm sure UNC & Duke have some too, I'm remember reading when Thorpe fired Butch, some went ballistic, it's a game, wrong play calling, fire the coach, fire the co-ordinator. I have tried to relate the other has a coach, has players that want and are trying to win Houston & Alabama are the favorites but I'm hoping K-State wins it all. Well basketball is starting to wind down, 12 days it's over.

State should be in good shape next year, even with the departures of Smith and Joyner. I'm not sure about Hubert. He loves Carolina, and he is a good man, but I'm not sure he's up to the task. Next year will be telling because he'll bring in his players. He's had to make it work with the players that caused Roy to retire before he wanted to. There are problems with the roster, but I think the key players will be gone. I think the big problems were between RJ Davis and Caleb Love. Hubert should have sat their rear ends down, Roy would have. Time will tell. Doherty was very abrasive and alienated a lot of people, Hubert is completely different, but it's already been questioned if he's the right man for the job. Fans and administration want winners. Hopefully Hubert will have better success next year.

UNC has some transfer portal players, is this the norm or does Hubert have a problem. I think he gets at 2 more years unless he has a Matt Doherty type year, I know a lot of fans are questioning his hire. This is Scheyers first year now he has to follow it up next. Yeah I think Smith is probably gone but I can't blame him at least he is not leaving animosity, he truly loves NC State. I am not sure about who stays, I know Jarkel is gone, Mahorsic is gone, Clark, D.J have one more year,
Morsell may have another year, PACK will miss Smith and Jarkel, Ross has improved a lot, Pass is getting better, Thomas will be good, not sure if Gantt has another year, PACK should be decent next year, how good depends on Portal transfers they are able to get.

I'd be surprised if Smith returns if he's a projected first round pick. He'll get advice to help him with his decision. Players that would have left sooner stick around because of the NIL deals.
Miami is alone carrying the flag for the ACC. Scheyer has done a fantastic job coaching in his first year, especially with all the weight of following a HOF coach. Duke is in good hands with him. He's gracious in defeat and modest in victory. I do admire him. I'm glad to see Princeton advancing - very refreshing to see a school like that having success. I haven't watched nearly as much basketball during the regular season as usual, but I'm really enjoying the NCAAT.

I will give Duke credit they have improved a lot over last couple of months, I watched those Kennesaw St player they were heartbroken. I like this time of year, I love it when top 16 gets whooped. I hoped some of Pack players, Baby indicated he may, I would love get him back for another year.

I was watching some analysts last night discussing the Purdue loss. They say it's going to happen more frequently because the big name schools get the best players (best that money can buy these days), and those guys are gone after a year, maybe two, but the mid majors keep kids for four years and develop them. The coach from Fairleigh Dickenson is an abrasive loud mouth - I hope they get bounced in the next round, and I think they will. I figured Purdue would be the first 1-seed to go down, but I didn't expect it to be in the first round. Painter seems like a really good guy, so I hate it for him and his team. Alabama and Texas have star players with injuries and Tennessee is missing its best player as well, so things are lining up well for Duke. Pitt is looking good and Miami squeaked out a win in a very competitive game. Thursday and Friday are my favorite days of the year with wall to wall basketball. It's going to be over before we know it.

I like Jarkel a lot and love baby T, that guy has heart he is gonna give 110% every night, he enjoys playing and loves NC State, I think the altitude hurt the Pack, DJ never got into his game, it bothered him a lot. they called a tight which was helping the Pack but its on to next year. I watched Kennesaw St play, they played their tails off, those guys showed the true emotion, some of these small program can knock you off, some top seeds have bit the dust already.

  • StunGunn Mar 15, 2023

I like Jarkel Joyner - good sportsmanship. Not a fan of Smith, but he has talent. The committee didn't do State any favors matching them up with Creighton in the first round. That's a tough game, but if State is on their game, they can win it.
I did my brackets - always do multiple - ones I think will win and ones picking upsets, which I usually stink at. I have Duke in the final four is most. They have a good path, and once they get to MSG, their home away from home, anything is possible. I hope Alabama doesn't win it all. They have trouble on their team, and I can't believe Miller is still playing as if nothing happened. Just win baby.
Carolina is a mess. Bacot is as good as gone, and either RJ or Love or both are gone. Already lost two bench players to the portal and Stylez is probably gone as well. The team will look completely different next year. Hubert could have done better, but this is the roster that caused HOF Roy to retire. What a mess.

Jack is more valuable than many think, not flashy, just a solid player, I think D.J. comes back, Ernest Ross has stepped up big this, Breon Pass will be a starter next, Greg Gantt has another year year, Thomas will play lots of minutes next year, not sure if Duwona returns, he has had valuable minutes and contributions this year, Mirada not sure about. Jarkel out of eligibility, Smith go pro, I think Morsell has another year, Casey is a solid player and great shooter, a starting five of Pass, Morsell,Clark, D.J. and Gantt and Thomas getting lots of minutes. Couple of solid recruits, maybe a transfer or two.

This rubber match with Carolina/Duke should be good. Neither team is a vintage team, but both have fairly evenly matched talent. I wasn't that impressed with the way Duke played in the second half against State at Cameron. I'm not a fan of having Game Day and Senior Night on the day of a big game. It can be a big distraction, like it was last year for Duke. I also don't like the idea of a 9:30 game - I think Carolina got that last year. The talking heads go back and forth on whether this is a must win game for Carolina to get into the Tourney, but I'm thinking it is, unless they go far in the ACCT. I don't see them doing that. At any rate, this year certainly hasn't gone the way it was expected for Carolina. I don't expect to see Bacot, Davis or Love back next year. I think and Joyner are gone for State (I think Joyner used up his eligibility, but with the extra Covid year, I'm not sure). Smith is a projected first round pick. I think Joyner is better though. DJ will be back.

I went on line, there is a calculator where you can put the winners of saturdays games and it will give you your seed-- Pack will be a 6 or 7 seed -- actually I would prefer 7 seed -- the 7 seed plays at 7: 00 6 seed plays at 9:30---according to all the pundits UNC win they are in, Loss their out but this is just media perception- who knows how the committee works. On another note FSU and Clemson are getting a little greedy-- I wish Texas, Oklahoma, Clemson, FSU, Bama, UGA, Tenn, Florida, LSU, Mich, Ohio ST, Sou Cal, UCLA, Oregon, would break off and form their own division, go with ESPN and let the other conferences work with other networks.

I hadn't noticed that UCLA was that good, but apparently Coach Cronin was not happy when they were projected as a 2-seed. So, you may have that one right, Max.
I hope Alabama gets bounced in the first round (I doubt it, but I hope so) after seeing that all they care about is winning. Never mind that their leading scorer gave the gun to his teammate and that gun was used in the murder of a young woman. I feel for her family having to see this kid still on the team. Sickening.
State may just be playing on Saturday of the ACCT, Max, so this is a great time for you to go to the ACCT. That must have been so disconcerting when you went in 2020 and the tournament was cancelled just before tip off.
The State//Duke game on Tuesday should be a great game. I don't see State blowing them out, but it will be a very competitive game.

What is wrong with Disney? I love them myself. They have my favorite romance stories. It sure looks that way, Max. The local radio guys speculated State could be as high as a 5-seed, depending on how they do in their remaining four regular season games, and then the ACCT. 5-seeds traditionally have trouble with the 12-seeds, but we'll see. The way it looks now, Carolina is on the outside of the bubble, and not even MJ can persuade the selection committee to pick them. We'll see, but what a disappointment this season has been.

Max - I saw Lunardi's seeds this morning after yesterday's games. It's nuts:
    UVA - 3
    Miami - 5
    Duke - 7???
    NC State - 8???
    UNC - 11
Clemson - 11 How can Duke be seeded higher than State? It looks like Carolina and Clemson are in play-in games if they're projected to be 11 seeds. That seems right for Carolina. The problem is the ACC is so weak this year, it's hard for teams to get quality wins in the conference.

  • StunGunn Feb 9, 2023
    Sports Legend

Agree Max, the Quad system is very flawed. The Quad value changes depending on how the team is doing, which is crazy. When State beat Duke, I don't remember if it was a Quad 1 or Quad 2. Duke has lost games since their game with State, but that should not devalue State's win IMHO. State should be squarely in the Tourney because they have quality wins. Carolina is a bubble team at best, and they have a very difficult schedule ahead, so I'm not sure they'll make it. It is a very flawed system. A team that is seeded too high can get hot and beat teams deserving of better seeding. I heard State was a 5 seed, but that will depend on how they finish down the stretch, including the ACCT. Their loss at Virginia is not a bad loss.

  • Maxwell Silver III Feb 7, 2023

Conference commissioners Swofford and others sold the conference souls to ESPN or others (mainly ESPN) not an SEC guy but SEC seems to have more control, ACC Network puts left over games on ACC N Xtra, then sell some games out to Bally, if you have ACC N streaming and the game is on Bally it's blacked out on ACC N Xtra. I was looking at the quad wins, the net rankings, its a flawed system, certain teams get the benefit of doubt. When being ranked. Miami and NC State wore Duke out yet Duke is still ranked ahead of them in the "net" it's a system to make sure certain team get extra value. Palm and Lunardi before last night had Duke as a 5 seed, probably drop em to 6 (sarcasm)

  • StunGunn Feb 5, 2023

It's all about the $$$. The Power 5 have the product, but Mickey Mouse pays the $$$ to the conferences. There should be a balance, but it looks like ESPN still calls the shots. I don't know how you feel, but the landscape of college sports has changed, and not for the better. I haven't watched nearly as many games as I used to watch. But that seems to be a "me" problem and things aren't ever going to go back to the way they were.

If N.D. is in all but football they should not get a bowl bid in the ACC bowl tie in games, as I said before the Commish is controlled by TV execs, the POwer 5 have the product, they band together and have more say so in Game days and game times-- the Power 5 give all the networks a schedule when games will be played. I have little respect for anything controlled by Disney--

ESPN is trying to make the ACC the expanded Big East, before expansion, ACC was its own, had complete control, the ACC Network is controlled by ESPN, they have more control than the ACC does. I would like it better if the ACC kicked, Pitt, B.C. Louisville, Syracuse and N.D. to the curb, add UCF, USF, K-State, Okla St & Kansas and Texas Tech be done with it.

  • StunGunn Jan 28, 2023

TOTALLY agree about Greensboro being permanent home for ACCT. The ACC wouldn't be the ACC without the Big Four. And it is centrally located like you said. I still miss the days of the ACC being nine teams, but expansion was necessary for survival.
As for POY, I think Smith has gotten attention, but it's hard to predict. He is an amazing player. So thin, but it was said today on an ESPN show that Smith can get any shot he wants and he can't be stopped. I think he's the leading scorer in the ACC, so he should certainly get consideration for ACC POY.
Did Wong play in the game last week versus State? I didn't see his name in the box score. He is a really tough player.
Jim Philips may be a good man, but he is not a good Commissioner for the ACC. Too dull and not dynamic at all. I wish he'd go back to the B1G.
I like State's chances against Wake. Hard to beat Smith and Joyner and DJ Burns.

  • Maxwell Silver III Jan 28, 2023

Pack play Wake, tough road game- T.Smith is probably the most valuable player KK has gotten, good kid, love watching him play, his personality is infectious, just having fun and he bleeds wolfpack red thru and thru, I think he has a shot a POY if media is fair, Bacot is a good player but he is one dimensional, Smith is very versatile, the guy at Miami is good also but media chose Bacot preseason POY and media hates to admit they were wrong, but I think Wong, Smith, and Bacot will be unanimous 1st team l. Because he is from Duke,, the freshman should also be first team. The ACC tournament will be in Greensboro this, wonder how long before they remove it from the mix. ACC tournament should be in Greensboro permanently, good size arena, centrally located, not affiliated with any school, ESPN has gotten too much control of the ACC, Swofford signed that over to ESPN for personal glory, the new commish is just a mouthpiece for ESPN, my rant, my 2 cents, penny for your thoughts

  • StunGunn Jan 27, 2023

Fortunately Smith is fine and he didn't miss any games.
The ACC always seems to surprise me, but this year is taking it to another level. To see Duke having a less than good year is surprising with all the talent. I like Scheyer.
I think Smith threw shade at Bacot with the sunglasses so Bacot returned the shade. Bacot's timing was bad because he didn't know Smith would be OK. Maybe Davis told him to apologize behind the scenes. Leaky got Smith's number so he could call him and make sure he was OK. I really like Leaky - not a mean bone in his body. I really hate all this NIL. It doesn't bring out the best in the players. Bacot is the highest profile player on the team, and it may have gone to his head and also caused some resentment with the other players. NIL isn't going away, but I think it has tainted college sports.

I couldn't bear to watch the game. Your foul prediction was right on with Carolina going to the line 39 times. I hope Smith is OK. Leaky isn't a dirty player, but he missed the block he was attempting and Smith went down hard.
I don't get these Quad wins. And they change as the team's W/L record changes. A team can beat a team like Duke, which was a Quad 1 win at the time, but if Duke falters, then it isn't a Quad 1 win?
