Garner, N.C. — On Tuesday, the town of Garner wanted to make it official: They are proud of one of their own for winning gold in Tokyo.
Randolph Ross, who is a graduate of Garner High School, won gold in the men's 4x400 relay at the 2020 Summer Olympics.
"It's just great to be able to go out there and represent," said Ross.
"I did not have any words. I was totally out of words [and] out of breath," recalled his mother Kriss Ross.
Because of Randolph Ross' major accomplishment, Garner Mayor Ken Marshburn proclaimed Sept. 7 as Randolph Ross Day.
During Thursday's Town Council meeting, Marshburn also presented Ross a key to the town.
"It will hopefully show our young people that, you know, you can accomplish a lot in life and work hard," said Marshburn.
Ross said, for him, the hard work continues.
"Knowing that this likely won't be the last one, it's great to be able to come home with gold, but it kind of makes you look forward to see what else you've got in store," he said.
Ross currently attends North Carolina A&T State University.
