North Carolina guard Caleb Love will enter the transfer portal, he announced Monday.
Love, a three-year starter, averaged 16.7 points per game as a junior, but often endured criticism from fans as the Tar Heels missed the NCAA Tournament. The 6-foot-4 junior shot 29.9% from 3-point range this season.
"I've taken some time with my family to re-evaluate what's best for me to continue to grow as a player and I've decided to enter the transfer portal to continue my journey," Love wrote.
Love thanked former UNC coach Roy Williams for "opening up the door of opportunity" and current coach Hubert Davis for "constantly challenging me."
Love made nine of 11 shots in the second half of the Tar Heels' 2022 NCAA semifinal victory against Duke, earning him a place in Tar Heel lore. Love had 22 points in the second half, including 10 points in a 13-0 UNC run early in the second half. His 3-pointer with 24 seconds left gave UNC a 4-point lead.
Love scored 21 points with five assists in UNC's victory at Duke in the final home game of Blue Devils' coach Mike Krzyzewski's career.
Love is the sixth UNC player to enter the transfer portal this offseason, joining reserves Dontrez Styles, Puff Johnson, Will Shaver, Justin McKoy and Tyler Nickell.
Fellow starters Armando Bacot and RJ Davis, like Love key contributors on the 2022 Final Four team, have announced they will return to UNC for another season.
In 101 career games (96 starts), Love averaged 14.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He made 200 3-pointers in his career.
