I think Jim Nantz is a classy guy and does a solid job; I'm surprised he's criticized.

I went away from tradition and made a pizza last night. Watched the fireworks on TV - not a fan or heat, humidity, and crowds. July 4th used to be a big deal, but less so lately. I appreciate the service men and women who make freedom possible for our Country. I can't - and won't - separate the Military from holidays like July 4th. They're the real heroes.

Ha ha about the "fake news". Yeah, I heard that most Native Americans aren't offended by the name "Redskins". There ARE bigger problems in the world, that's for sure! I'm a Panthers fan, and your team got Josh Norman. Can't blame him for signing with the 'Skins after Gettleman made the decision to rescind the franchise tag on him. Norman is a hot head, but he wanted to stay with the Panthers. Norman had the last laugh on that decision.

when NFL cranks up, hope Redskins will have a good season, glad Phil Simms got the boot he won't have to say Redskins, I asked a local Native American how he felt about the Name Redskins- he said Native American have problems more pressing than to worry about something as trivial as a sports name-- then he looked at me and winked and said he was Redskins fan-just like the news media, if there ain't news then lets create something controversial.-dare say it--FAKE NEWS

We're inching closer to kick-off. Still a ways away, but training camps should be starting in the not too distant future. Cam was throwing (albeit indoors, but it's still progress). Baseball is in full swing (pun intended), but can't wait for football season. And cooler weather! Not a fan of the heat and humidity.

We like the Outer Banks the best - it's a longer trip, but worth it, especially if we can get a place in Duck - very quiet area. But they're ripping down the little "cottages" (they think they can charge more if they call it a "cottage"), and putting up McMansions. No thanks. 10 bedrooms, tons of families piling into one place. Oh well. We may go for a few days last minute and see what's available, other than renting a house.

used to go to a restaurant on the waterway in Calabash and eat their lunch specials, over the years price has doubled and portions got smaller, don't do it anymore. I mostly stay at the Holden beach area about a half mile from the coast. I just like the atmosphere at the beach, smelling the salt air, after 2-3 days I am ready to come home.
we used to cruise the waterway on saturday afternoons that was fun, play a little golf, got friends that like to go out deep sea fishing but never got interested in that,

I love going for a long run at the beach - not on the sand - on the road or sidewalk (depending on what's available). Love the level land - no hills to deal with. Grilled steaks - oh yeah. Not a fan of going out to the over-priced restaurants where the food isn't good, they're crowded and noisy. Would rather eat at the house. Still looking forward to cooler weather and football, which to me, is the appetizer for the main course of basketball (although with each passing year, I like football more and more).

So true about the summer when you're young, Max. I used to LOVE summer. Not so much anymore. Not a fan of the heat and humidity. Also not a fan of golf, and while baseball was the first sport I watched as a kid, I don't enjoy it nearly as much these days. I remember the classic UNC/NC State marathon ACC baseball Tourney game back in 2012 (I think) played at the DBAP, and it went 18 innings! I was blogging with some State and Carolina fans. That game went on till past 1 AM. We all wanted our respective team to win, but as it got later and later, we just wanted ONE team to win. That was a heck of a game.

College basketball will always be my favorite, and like you said about FB on weekends, I'll watch all the ACC games I can, especially Duke, Carolina and State, both basketball and football, but basketball is special to me. I watched part of the 30 for 30 on the Celtics/Lakers. It was well done.

The State/ND football game will be a great trip. State wins that game.

when you are young the summer is special as you get older, not as much, I still enjoy going to the beach, grilling out having a cold one, maybe a round of golf, I watch some Nascar, some golf, do not get interested baseball until late september by then it full throttle on football, I go to a few basketball games during the year, my passion for BB has waned over the years but FB it has grown, Games are only once a week but it is an event to attend games, so I looked forward to 7 events during the fall and when the team is to far away, its wall to wall FB games on saturday TV. have noticed that on the national talk shows on radio, not all but a lot like to dwell on negativity, that is why I love Packman he tries to stay on topic, ESPN and the local guys are the worse, it has been 9 months since I have listen to the afternoon clowns and your fav gunny D-Glenn, has he been to the beach and saved young children from Jaws, has his wife made the cover of sports illustrated swim suit issue.

Feel the same, Max. I'm hesitant to want to fast forward through two months of my life, but this is the dead zone for sports to me.

Kind of surprised that Yurksaven is coming back. He knows he'd most likely go undrafted, but I thought he'd play in Europe for a year and then try for the NBA. I wish both players good luck with their decisions.

Won't be any pressure on ND unless their TV contract (which doesn't renew until sometime in the 2020's) renews for significantly less than it is now. That's the main reason they stay independent.

Sounds good to me! ECU wanted to be in the ACC, but that would have made five ACC teams in NC, and it wouldn't have changed the footprint for the TV market to grab more money. Would like a North/South division. ACC was a southern conference to begin with. ESPN is over-extended and I wonder how they'll finance the ACC Network.

one simple move-change to north and south division, big four all in same division, go ahead and add 1 team to me Cincinnati makes sense, good BB, decent FB, footprint in Ohio put pressure on ND to go all sports.

It's a travesty that State doesn't play Duke every year. One thing (there are many) that I hate about the expansion of the ACC, is that the Big Four don't get to play each other every year. That special rivalry should have been preserved. The price of "progress", I suppose.

  • Maxwell Silver III May 18, 2017
    Bench Warmer

over the years coaches have always placed high priority on beating your rival, but they also have had special places for other teams- with Sheridan it was Clemson, Kiffin and Reed just beating anybody was enough, Mike O'Cain was a good person but was a terrible coach, how he lasted 7 years is beyond me, Chuck beating FSU was his mecca, O'Brian took the in-state rivalry to heart probably more than previous, glad to see Doeren putting emphasis on in state shame that we don't play Duke every year, those were some special games-one.

  • StunGunn May 17, 2017
    Sports Legend

Wow - going to South Bend should be a great experience, and I bet State wins. I can see where beating FSU and Clemson are more of a feather in the cap of Doeren, but it's the rivalry thing that makes beating Carolina so important. State has won more than they have lost against Carolina in recent history. Agree about Doeren being reserved, but he sure let loose when he beat the Heels this year. He was whooping it up on the sidelines, probably because he had been so heavily criticized in the weeks leading up to that game. Coaches live in a pressure cooker, and I feel bad for the heat their families have to endure when there's a lot of negativity directed toward the coach.

  • Maxwell Silver III May 14, 2017
    Bench Warmer

last year during football season, you heard more about Gott being needing to do something, Doeren is kind of low keyed football coach not that fiery kind on the sidelines, I like his approach but it may doom him in the end, I like asst coaches to be more demonstrative, one of my favorites was Reggie Herring, you must want to win all games but to me their some that are different -FSU is the big one for me then Clemson and UNC, we got Clemson and UNC at home, would like to have a fourth "big game" only Duke or Miami could fill it. Now if Notre Dame were to Join and we play them every year. This year I am going to South Bend to see the Pack-Irish game. Playing Syracuse, BC, Pitt, G.T.or Virginia is not exciting to me, Louisville, Wake and VT has their moments

Doeren was on the HOT seat last year. State had a talented team, and they were struggling. Losing to Clemson in OT (thanks to that missed chip shot FG) got to them, I think. But they beat Carolina (hated that, to be honest), and that went a long way to saving Doeren's job. Then State won their bowl, which also helped. I don't care for him - he made beating Carolina his platform, and he seemed to whine about having a young team, etc. when his team struggled. But State finished the season strong, while Carolina tanked. I like Cutcliff the best out of all the local FB coaches. I think he's a good guy who truly cares about his players, and look what he's accomplished at Duke. Just my two cents.

  • Maxwell Silver III May 12, 2017
    Bench Warmer

This year is a crucial year for Doeren, 8 wins he is secure but can't backslide next year
9 wins and he is safe a couple of years - 6 or less wins I think he can start packing but down deep I feel good about his future, just has taken a while to get things into place.

sometimes sleeping giants just keep sleeping-I would not put a lot integrity in the afternoon clowns-don't think Chizik was a great loss, it was a question mark when Auburn hired him, he walked into a great situation and to his credit took advantage of it, he has rode it since then, he was fired at Auburn for a reason. I really didn't think much of Dave Huxtable (I started to say Cliff) at first but must give him credit he has built a darn good defense.

  • StunGunn May 12, 2017
    Sports Legend

I heard on the afternoon show that someone called State's FB team a possible "sleeping giant". That remains to be seen, but they do have a lot of returning talent. Carolina lost a LOT of talent this year, not to mention losing Chizik, although the D did take a step back last season, and I don't know why. We have three months before we can even sniff a kick-off.

I have read some articles, one from SB nation, said this may the best pack fb team since 2003, well I think they can be good, that team had a outstanding defense and had Phillip Rivers, this team may have as good of a defense and offense will be good but they got no Phillip Rivers, remains to be seen how good they can be and they are also in the division with Clemson and FSU plus Louisville has Jackson.

Well, your family sure was divided in the schools they pulled for. Must have been some fun times when the schools played each other. One of my daughters went to Carolina; the other went to State. I'm a Carolina fan, but respect all programs.

I'm not surprised Piccolo got passes. My brother plays adult hockey, and he was talking to a guy who was on one of the school's hockey teams (might have been Carolina, but I'm not sure). Anyway, college hockey isn't like football or basketball in this area, but the kid got all sorts of passes from his professors. This was before everything hit the fan at Carolina, so it may not be the case anymore. It just shows that the student/athletes have it a lot different than non-athlete students.
