Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule passionate pregame speech as part of the university’s breast cancer awareness efforts is making the rounds on social media.
The university released a video of Rhule’s speech as part of its “GBRewind” series on Wednesday, days after Nebraska beat Purdue 31-14.
On Saturday, Rhule said the Cornhuskers had a pink ribbon on the back of their helmets for the first time in school history.
“That’s for all the wives, the moms, the sisters that have been affected by breast cancer … but it’s even greater than that,” Rhule said. “It’s a way for us to honor those in our lives – our mom, our grandma, our girlfriend’s mom, our aunt – the people in our lives who have fought for us.”
Rhule said his mother and his wife Julie’s mother both battled breast cancer. It’s part of the reason why he wore pink ribbons while coaching against Purdue.
“These women that fight this battle, they’re warriors,” Rhule said of women battling breast cancer.
Nebraska (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) has won three consecutive games and five of its last six games. One more win would make the Cornhuskers bowl eligible for the first time since the 2016 season.
“Remember the woman that went to … war for you in your life, who sacrificed for you in your life,” Rhule told his team.
This season is Rhule’s first coaching Nebraska. At the NFL level, he compiled an 11-27 record coaching the Carolina Panthers from 2020-2022.
