NC State quarterback MJ Morris, who sat out the final games of the season to preserve a year of eligibility, will enter the transfer portal, he announced Wednesday.

"After many conversations and prayer, I’ve come to the heartfelt decision to enter my name into the transfer portal with three years of eligibility," Morris said in his statement posted on social media.

Morris started four games at quarterback in 2023, replacing an ineffective Brennan Armstrong and helping the Wolfpack to victories over Marshall, Clemson and Miami.

But then he decided to redshirt, a somewhat shocking decision with NC State still in contention for a 10-win season. NC State turned back to Armstrong and won their final three games of the season.

"As games progressed and time went on, MJ came to me and let me know that he was still thinking about preserving his redshirt," NC State coach Dave Doeren said on Nov. 9. "I was surprised by that because he was our starter and really didn't expect that for a starting player to want to sit back down.

"He said he wasn't sure which way to go, but he wanted me to know that was something that he was thinking about and talking with his family about. After the fourth game, he was very decisive in telling me it was important to him and his family to preserve his redshirt."

His father previously told WRAL News that MJ Morris was not planning to transfer.

Morris threw for 648 yards in 2023 with seven touchdowns and one interception. He played as a freshman in 2022, due to injuries at quarterback, and passed for 719 yards and seven touchdowns with five interceptions.

"I want to thank Wolfpack Nation for their love and support," Morris said.

Morris will have three years of eligibility remaining. With Armstrong having exhausted his eligibility, NC State is likely to look in the transfer portal for more experience at the position in 2024.
