Carrboro wins 4th straight boys swimming title; DSA's Lucca Battaglini shatters records

Durham School of the Arts' Lucca Battaglini now holds four state records and has been named the Most Outstanding Swimmer three straight season, while Carrboro's boys team won its fourth straight state title.

For the fourth consecutive season, Carrboro took home the N.C. High School Athletic Association boys swimming & diving state championship.

The Jaguars outpaced Lake Norman Charter in the team standings of the 3A championship at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary on Thursday. Carrboro finished the day with 237 points, 39 points ahead of Lake Norman Charter.

Andrew Commins led the way for Carrboro, winning three gold medals with the Jaguars. Commins won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:37.96 and the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.33. He also joined Matt Strada, Oliver Normand, and Grey DeWalt on the first-place 400 freestyle relay team.

Strada won the 200 yard IM with a time of 1:55.95, giving Carrboro a fourth gold medal at the event.

Carrboro won the 1A/2A state championship in 2021 and 2022, then claimed 3A titles in 2023 and 2024.

Behind a record-breaking performance by Lucca Battaglini, Durham School of the Arts finished third in the team standings. Battaglini was named the Most Outstanding Swimmer for the third straight season after setting two new state records.

The first state record fell in the 100 freestyle with a time of 42.60, then Battaglini broke the state record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 47.30.

Battaglini now holds fourth state records. Last year, he broke the state record in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.

Lake Norman Charter's Hayden Schroeder broke his own 3A record in the diving portion of the competition on Wednesday at Pullen Aquatic Center in Raleigh. Schroeder posted a score of 581.7 to claim the record.

Commins and Lake Norman Charter's Jay Burroughs were named recipients of the NCHSAA Sportsmanship Award.
