Extra Effort: Cleveland's Sadie Johnston always on the move

As a libero in volleyball, Sadie Johnston is constantly moving for Cleveland High School. When she's off the court, she keeps moving too.

"I'm just trying to figure myself out and I feel like giving myself things to do will just help me," Johnston said.

There's volleyball, track and softball at Cleveland, plus travel volleyball and softball.

"The confidence she's gained over the years, which is a result of the work that she's put in, on and off the field, is really what has been impressive as a coach to see where she's at today," travel softball coach Kevin Fulcher said.

"Her motivation is just infectious," Cleveland softball coach Jason Morris said.

"Her positive attitude always shines through," Cleveland vice principal Cora Godwin added.

And when she's not playing sports, she works with programs like National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Unified, which is a Special Olympics partnership to promote inclusion in sports.

"I think she's just well-rounded. She just has a little bit of everything. She is a great student-athlete, she's great in her academics," CTE teacher Kayla Clifton said.

And here's another challenge, her mom, Shelley Johnston, is the head volleyball coach at Cleveland.

"She loves being pushed by me and I'm a very aggressive coach when it comes to training the girls, so I think she likes the high expectations I set," Shelley Johnston said.

But she's not the one driving Sadie to be great, that comes all on her own.

"Even as a coach or a mom, either one, I'm like, how does she do it all? And I think that's the reason a lot of girls look up to her, because they're like, how does she do all of that and still have a smile on her face and is still very encouraging to others around her."

And that's why Sadie Johnston is this week's winner of the Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award.
