Extra Effort: Weldon's Briana Moody leaves big mark with quiet personality

At first glance, Briana Moody might seem a little quiet, but her impact on Weldon City Schools has not gone unnoticed.

Briana Moody isn't the loudest Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award winner we've ever had.

"As a person, she's very quiet," basketball coach April Whitaker said.

"She don't fuss, she don't like a lot of drama," volleyball and softball coach Phyllis Neville added.

"Off the court, I'm just quiet, don't really talk to anybody, go straight to class," Moody said with a smile.

But she still knows how to leave her mark for Weldon City Schools.

"On the court, it's very aggressive, like when I get mad, it makes me play better," Moody said.

Volleyball, basketball, softball, she's always moving.

"She moves in silence and I love it, she just says one thing to the group, and everyone's like, 'okay,'" assistant coach Katrina Bevier-Hunter said.

"She's what I like to call an 'encourager,' she brings on the young athletes, team them what it is they need to know," Weldon City Schools athletics director James Lynch said.

Academically, she's already two steps ahead. Moody will graduate from Roanoke Valley Early College with an Associate's Degree.

"There's so much I can say about Briana without getting emotional, because I've seen her grow," Roanoke Valley Early College principal Dr. Jeannie Roberson said.

"She represents well, she does, and I'm proud to be her principal and watch her graduate and go across the stage."

In her free time, Moody works with kindergarten students at KIPP Halifax College Prep.

"Briana has a very calm spirit, which is really good for working with young children," teacher Cymie Terry-Rawlins said.

Initially, her work with the class was based around a senior project, but Moody has stuck with the group, even after her necessary hours.

"I just love the kids, they're so fun," Moody said.

"Giving myself to them, will help them become like me when they grow up and they might win this award when they get older."

"She's not an average student by any means of the word," Terry-Rawlins said.

So quiet? Mabye, but Moody stands out..

"Whether it's on the court, or in the classroom or in the community, she's going to give that extra effort with everything," Whitaker said.

Which is why Briana Moody is this week's winner of the Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award.
