What NCHSAA realignment could look like with 32 schools in 1A or 8A

The N.C. High School Athletic Association sent out an important survey on Monday that asked member schools for feedback on some concepts for realignment.

A couple of the models proposed in the survey included what the upcoming realignment would look like if one of the upcoming eight classifications was capped at 32 schools and the other seven received an "even" distribution thereafter. The NCHSAA is headed to an eight classification model regardless. These concepts of a "Big 32" and a "Small 32" are proposals that are in addition to the proposal of an even split across eight classifications, which is still in play.

NCHSAA asks member schools for input on realignment process, future of conferences

As with the 4A and 1A classifications today, there would be a significant disparity in the attendance numbers between the smallest school and largest school in the 1A and 8A classifications. The idea here is that a 32-school 1A or a 32-school 8A would create a more even playing field.

Today, the difference in Average Daily Membership (a.ka. school attendance numbers) between largest and smallest 1A schools is 786 students. In 4A, that difference is 2,363. The NCHSAA says that with a "Small 32" 1A in the next realignment, the disparity between top and bottom in 1A would be 237 students. With a "Big 32" 8A, that disparity would be 1,532 students.

We decided to do a breakdown for HSOT Insiders that shows what these "Small 32" and "Big 32" models would actually look like in practice.

In the first part of this breakdown, we show you what a 32-school 1A or 8A classification would look like if realignment was done to the current 436 member schools today.

After that, we have a breakdown of what either of these prospects might actually look like by 2025. With five new schools expected to be added to increase the number of member schools to 441, this example is going to be closer to what we'd actually get when realignment comes.

Important Note: The actual realignment ahead of the 2025-26 school year will be based off of the 2024-25 ADM numbers, not the 2023-24 ones that we are using.

What 32 Schools in 8A Would Look Like Today
