The Carolina Hurricanes recalled goaltender Antti Raanta from the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League, the team announced on Tuesday. The 34-year-old goaltender was waived earlier in the month and reassigned to Chicago on December 17.
Raanta had a 1-0-1 record in two appearances with the Wolves, averaging 2.90 goals-against and an .875 save percentage. He signed with the Hurricanes as a free agent on July 28, 2021. Raanta has made 69 appearances with the team over the last three seasons, posting a 40-13-8 record, 2.59 goals-against average, .901 save percentage and seven shutouts. In 12 starts this season, Raanta is 6-5-1, with an .854 save percentage, allowing 3.61 goals against on average. The save percentage ranks 80th in the NHL.
24-year-old Pyotr Kochetkov has started the most games for the Hurricanes in net this season (16) going 7-7-3 in his 18 games played. Kochetkov has an .894 save percentage with a 2.69 goals allowed average. Both Kochetkov and Raanta are seeing more time than expected this season, as Freddie Andersen is out indefinitely with a "blood clotting issue."
In conjunction with this move, goaltender Yaniv Perets was reassigned to the Norfolk Admirals in the ECHL. Perets has a 5-5-1 record with the Admirals this season to go along with 2.38 goals-against average, a .916 save percentage and one shutout.
The Hurricanes are currently fifth in the Metropolitan Division with a 17-13-4 record. Carolina has lost four of its past five games, although three of those losses have come after regulation and all have been by only one goal.
