Why don't you go tell the family and friends of Eve Carson (may she rest in peace) that her murderers should not be executed because Dean says so. I don't think you would get a positive reaction. posted by BDF2.0

Funny but I thought you told me once that physical retaliation was not the way to handle things. You can't have it both ways. This in no way degrades her death or makes a statement as to what should happen to her killers. I'm just saying that you change when you talk about UNC.

Why would I waste my time reading a bunch of posts by some ? Maybe if you spent more time actually following sports instead of trying to come across as some Grand Puba of Duke D-Riding you could say something with some basis. I'll get back to you when you give me something worth thinking about ok.

Dean Smith probably owns one record that will never be broken. The only coach ever ejected from a final four game while playing against a team being coached by a former assistant of his. Dean 1 > K 0

Many Tarheel fans have said coach K's 4 NT's to Dean's 2 means nothing because poor Dean coached many years when only the tournament champs got into the big dance. Using that criteria to the present day, coach K would still lead old Deannie boy 3 NT's to 1. So instead of twice as many NT's as old Deannie boy, he would have 3 times the amount. Another reason tarheel fans might want to thank the NCAA for those complimentary tickets to the big dance is, for without them Duke would lead UNC 3 to 2 in NT's also. The '93 '05 and '09 banners would say UNC NIT Champions instead! Duke gets their championships the old fashion way "they earn it". (If any of these facts are incorrect please feel free to correct them. If not you can always look for spelling errors or maybe improper puctuation and if you find nothing there, just be creative!)

Next season after the first dozen or so games coach K will surpass Dean in the last remaining category, total victories. With a deep run in the BIG BOY tournament he may even become the winningest coach of all time. When that happens will this thread then finally be put to rest for the sake of all posterity, as coach K is proclaimed by all as the greatest coach of all time! (PS wouldn't it be a fitting climax for him to break Knights victory record and surpass Rupp on the NT list as they cut down the nets on his 2nd back to back championship.)

Only an idiot dook fan like you would proclaim k the "greatest coach of all time".
Just as this thread is stupid, so your comment is stupid. You have two of the greatest college basketball coaches ever, with each being a bit greater in specific areas. It's like comparing babe and aaron and saying one is a better homerun hitter than the other. Or Washington and Lincoln and saying one was the better president. Differnet times, different parameters. It depends on your idea of what defines "greatest". Dean was arguably the greatest for his time. k is arguably greatest for his time. Wooden was greatest for his time. It's like saying my $100.00 bill will buy more doughnuts than your $100.00 bill. It is a stupid argument that cannot be resolved favoring one over the other. Both are great coaches. Love them or hate them, that is a fact. Only idiots argue over that.

It's simple. They changed the game of college basketball because of Coach Smith. He's the reason the came up with a shot clock.Coach K,is a great motivator and coach.I'd say maybe the best motivator, but no better coach than Smith or Roy.

Duke was playing their best basketball of the season at the right time, and was fortunate enough to stay healthy.I will give Coach K credit for getting Zoobs to contribute like he did.Was an important part of the championship run.

  • BeastOnTheHill May 12, 2010

judging from your childish comments and lack of knowledge, I would say that you have never seen a Dean Smith coached team play the 4 corners offense. it seems you assume that UNC came out and played 4 corners in every game for every minute. How stupid. the tatic was used in certain situations, usually at the end of a half or regulation, was within the rules of the game and was used to force teams to come out and play rather than pack back in a zone and force a two point shot from long range. you're just another kids who has to yap his mouth about something you know nothing about.

I guess the floor slap and the flop are the most innovative achievements for the head rat. talk about an embarrassment.

oh and Dean and Roy still own k on a head to head basis. accpet that FACT however you can.

I think Dean still gets the slight edge at this point. Seeing him drawing up winning plays with seconds left, coaching a comeback from an impossible deficit, taking some relatively lesser talented teams and winning the reg season or ACC Tourney - I don't see that K has beat that yet. But I have to give K credit especially after what the did this past year.

Spectators have suffered through such actionless occasions as Missouri beating Kansas 41-35 and 42-41; Virginia beating North Carolina State 39-36 and 45-40; Notre Dame making 213 passes before shooting in one possession against Kentucky; and North Carolina making 15 foul shots and no field goals in the last 12 minutes of its game at Clemson. This is a paragraph from a SI article on the shot clock. Carolina is only one of the games listed. Smith did use the slow down game at times, but he was not the only one. So please stop putting it out there that he was the only reason for it, I know you did not say those exact words but you do imply it. Plus the NBA instituted it in the 50's and women's NCAA teams started in 1970, was he responsible for those also?

  • Dreamchaser May 12, 2010

He didn't invent it, as I was informed, but he did improve it. The four corners was still a scoring offense as well as a stall. It opened up a lot of back door drives.

I think most people either forgot or never knew that in the '68 ACC semifinals NC State beat Duke 12 - 10 by holding the ball. The most boring couple of hours I've ever spent in front of a tv. If memory serves me correctly, one official pulled up a chair and sat at midcourt. I believe at halftime State led 4 - 2.

College is about preparing young people for the future. Even John Wooden said that Dean was the best at teaching the game of basketball. His players learned to play hard, smart, and unselfish. When asked about any regrets, Al McGuire said that his only regret was that he didn't send his son to Dean, because he would have learned the game and had a long pro career. Always thinking of the player first, Coach Smith was one of the first coaches to suggest that his star player (Phil Ford) enter the draft early. Even though many entered the NBA early from Smith's program, most returned and got their degree. Dean Smith was the perfect college professor of Basketball (and life) 101.

Seems as though you confuse invent with innovate. They aren't synonyms. John McClendon invented the offense, Dean innovated it.

Might want to get a new dictionary there, Webster.
    in·no·vate (n-vt)
To begin or introduce (something new) for or as if for the first time.
    v.intr.
To begin or introduce something new.
"Copied" is the word you're looking for :) Just like I did here, "copy and paste".

Nope, he didn't copy it, he took an idea and improved it, made it better, made it his own.

John McClendon invented the offense while coaching at schools like Hampton, Kentucky State, Tennessee State A&I & North Carolina Central in the 1940's through the early 1960's. Do you think the offense was very well known throughout mainstream America? Dean was able to perfect the offense he learned through his Kansas connections. Therefore making him an innovator of the Four Corners offense.

Lame! Stealing is stealing whether it is from an adult or a baby. Copying is copying whether it is from a coach at a div.I or div.II or high school. Geez man even you should see that. If it was coach K you'd be the first one to complain. Using your analogy if a man steals $100 invests it and turns it into $1000 then he really didn't steal it. He perfected it, making him an "innovator". Wow! Side question: are you a used car salesman?

Is k stealing when he has a player come off a screen and shoot a jump shot?

Did he steal his strategy of having jump shooters kick the nearest defender, or did he "innovate" it? I think that's an original because I've never seen a player not wearing a Duke uniform do it.

Correct but no one, not even coach K claims he has a patent on it. I never said there was anything wrong with it. The books only record W's & L's not how you won them. I would have done the same myself. Use the rules to your advantage, it's the American way.

I see no reason we can't compromise and say that's pretty close to accurate. I might take exception to "perfected" but there is no doubt he ran it well. If you do word/phrase association with any knowledgeaball bball fan of my era and say "Dean Smith" your response is likely to be "four corners".
