national titles is not the only measure...just the only one duke fans want to consider...Dean coached for a decade where you had to win the ACC to go to the tourney...and there are many records he stills owns...not that it really matters or that anyone will really care. loyalties are set.

The question should be Who is the Greatest coach between Dean Smith, Roy Williams, or Billy Donovan because they all have two National Titles. Billy did go back to back though so that might not be fair either. Dean vs Roy I guess

As to your "highest academic standards in the country," does that include plagiarism and grammar/vocabulary? I think Stanford, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Brown may have to disagree there. You know, the REAL Ivy League schools? The only point you're making is that you are immature and childish. And sorely lacking in any basketball knowledge other than that at the end of your nose. Doc, have you noticed NO Duke fans here defending you? That may be a hint that you are wayyyy off base. Just a thought. Enjoy your game.
BTW, I don't have any co-workers, I own the company. They are called employees.

As far as comparing Dean Smith and K, rediculous. They coached in different eras, and both are great.

22 years head coaching for Roy, 2 titles. (A NT every 11yrs)
35 years head coaching for K, 4 titles. (A NT every 8.75yrs)
What was that about keeping pace again?

Let me help out those who don't comprehend English well. "...since Roy came home" means since 2003 (as the comment was about the post-Dean era). So, to re-do the math ...
7 years for Roy, 2 titles (one every 3.5 years)
1 title for k (A NT every 7 yrs)
That might be keeping pace in dook math, but not anywhere else.
— Posted by heelman73
Roid has 1.5 titles.....so his rate is 4.666666666 or any other time he is handed a chance to win something important. Plus im not sure they will have these last 2 titles until the NCAA is done with their investagation.......so i think we should just leave it at that for right now.
— Posted by outroykickme
1.5 titles........So I ask this question for the last time........If its so easy to win with someone elses recruits why dont all great coaches come in and do it?? You've stated on these boards several times that K is the greatest ever yet he failed at coming in and winning right away unlike Roy who took players he probably wouldnt have recruited and led them to the titile. So I have a great idea.....lets leave it at 2 national championships until you can explain this like an adult!!
— Posted by larrys080Who is to say the level of talent was the same for the recruits that Coach K and Roy each took over?

Hints why I used the term "definitive time frame," which in this case meant 2003. Glad you were able to put that together.
I could care less about the since he came to UNC thing anyways regardless of what you and someone else were discussing, I was just talking about since he has been a head coach. See I don't do the thing where you choose specific dates to make your argument more sound. I enjoy looking at the bigger picture, or total body of work in this case. And in this case, Roy is behind pace.

UNC fans got on DBD for using a 27 year span, your doing the same thing here. Using a timeframe that best suits your argument, a common tactic on these forums. And I believe he was referencing those 2 other guys that suxed it up at Carolina.

Wrong! I didn't choose a time frame. Amused referenced the coaches since Smith. Obviously, each is independent of the other, so he initiated the reference to three different periods. Two may have been less than stellar. The third obviously is not.

7 to 2 in the National Coach of the Year Award stats shows that the rest of the country recognizes what UNC fans refuse to admit...
And Coach K still has a couple more years to continue to build his stats...
As for why there was no asterick next to the post-dean era...ALL of the UNC coaches since Dean have had a huge amount of talent on the team as the program is "already built"--Coach K can't be blamed for the fact that UNC has made some poor choices in coaches. -

Mangum,
You're killing me man. K is a mentor to the whole ACC, seriously? K with his infamous foul mouth and you're talking about someone slamming a hand on a scorer's table. And yes, I know Roy has a foul mouth too. Both of them could do with a soap meal. K is a great coach yes, but not someone who I'd want my child to pattern their behavior after. In truth, there shouldn't be any room for K or Roy's vocal behavior either, but both of them are to the points in their career where the refs and conference officials do nothing about it to the detriment of college basketball.
— Posted by kennywalters
Oh noes! He slammed his hand on the scorers table??!? Your right who wants their child to have that kind of passion. Also, about the head to head; How long had Dean been established? Did the streak go from Dean to K(in the timeline of K's start at Duke). There is a learning curve when starting at a new coaching job(incase you are unaware). Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the series start off 6-Dean 1-K in the first 3 years? Do you always herp when you derp or are you putting on a show for us? I think both coaches were the greatest of their respective eras. However if you are trying to discredit K for language and hand slamming, I have a handful of straw you may grasp at.
— Posted by rx74u2nv
Yeah, i agree. As much as UNC fans tout the head to head, a fact that definitely needs to be considered is that Dean was successful and established when K was (painfully) growing the program and creating the type of team he needed. Congrats to Dean, but surely it would be different if they had concurrent peaks.
— Posted by dbd2014
— Posted by ssjack830Wow, interesting diatribe there. U must be a UNC fan. haha. You do realize that K went to 7-9 FF's and won back to back NC's from the late 80's to mid to early 90's dont you. Do you know who the coach of UNC was at that time? I think you can figure that one out.
And let me ask you this one, because it always confuses me. While Dean had all that talent for all those years, how did he only win two NC's
And when Deano/Old Smoky had to win the ACC tournament, the ACC was bad and Dean didnt lose any players during that decade.
So take your argument and stick it. -

really? so explain why dook fans don't put an asterisk to all those wins and recruits k picked up while Carolina retired a legend at the top of his game(check guthridge's record the next 3 yrs), and a rookie coach struggled until Roy came. K was "established" when Roy came...having won the title in '01...then he disappears in the tournament early for the next 8 yrs while Roy, the rookie in the ACC wins two titles...hmmmm...there's so many examples of advantages K had from 1980 to '99 while LOSING NO TALENT EARLY, while Dean sent multiple future NBA all stars and legends early...jordan, worthy, stackhous, wallace...it was never a level playing field...if Dean kept his players, instead of doing what's best for them, K would have lost even more and maybe a few ACC titles as well...any real fan knows that and even more...won't even get into the fact that Dean for a decade had to win the ACC tournament to even go to the ncaa...but I expect dook fans to believe what they want and retreat to the "too bad" defense...when K breaks the record, he should send a "thank you" note to Dean for retiring and gutting his teams repeatedly...plus those wins at army were a gift...sure that competition was as hard as the ACC...right.

Just for you I'm having to coin a new word. That diatribe of your's is full of nothing but a litany of "homerisms".

The only fact contained in your blathering tirade is the fact that you have secured the "Homer of the Year Award". Congratulations, it is a well deserved honor; now you can thank all the little people who made it possible and exit stage left.

Yeah, i agree. As much as UNC fans tout the head to head, a fact that definitely needs to be considered is that Dean was successful and established when K was (painfully) growing the program and creating the type of team he needed. Congrats to Dean, but surely it would be different if they had concurrent peaks.
