Coach K is light years ahead of smith, and 1-0 against roy in title game action...roy couldn't even get it done in the nit...pathetic...and all i'm going to hear from unc fans is wait until next year...which Duke should be pretty good again, and unc might make the ncaa tourney this time around

Especially if they expand to 96 teams.

Both are hall of fame coaches. Both are legends. Both are excellent representatives of both their institutions and the of the ACC, unlike many of the petty, ugly, and childish "fans" posting in this forum.

Both are great coaches theres no denying either. What people don't seem to understand is that "who is the greatest coach" is more than just wins and losses. I think Dean wins because anyone who has ever played for him remains loyal to this day, right down to the managers. Times were different, you say Dean was lucky in his two well if K had to win the ACC tournament like Dean did for a while he'd only have one so it's not even fair to compare numbers.Dean always put his players interest first when it came to going pro early I don't think that is the case with the Duke players ask Corey Maggette or Elton Brand. The great John Wooden whom everyone considers the greatest of all-time even said that Dean was the greatest mind the college game had ever known. Well I'll just have to take his word for it.

I stopped reading anything this tool (Thor) types long long ago. he/she sounds like a 10 year old. "he is 1-0 against Roy in title game action."
"k is light years ahead of Smith."
wow, not the sharpest knife in the drawer are ya?
so I guess in your dark blue world "title game action" is all that matters. How convienient~!
Dean Smith owns records that K will never reach. -

35 consecutive seasons at .500 or better. Smith's only losing season was his first, 1961-62, when the Tar Heels finished 8-9.
so in 2013 lil k will make it to 30 years of .500 or better if he doesn't have a losing season and then only 5 more years to go.
1 other coach who has played on and coached an NCAA championship team. Knight was a guard on Ohio State's 1960 title team and then coached Indiana to championships in 1981 and '87. Smith was a reserve guard on Phog Allen's 1952 title team at Kansas.
this is my favorite one
33 straight years finishing in the conference's top three and 20 years in the top two~!
so then if lil k can finish in the top 3 in the acc until 2028 he can tie Dean on this one.
careful enough for ya? -

— Posted by BeastOnTheHillThose are all impressive records, no doubt - but for all of the trash heels fans talk about Duke's yearly regular season successes not mattering because they've been followed by them "flaming out" or "failing to meet expectations", or how K can't get his team to win the big ones anymore, there is a certain irony in a list of fairly meaningless regular season stats versus National Championships when comparing Dean and K. Typical.
1.Wooden
2.Rupp, Kryzyzewski
3.Knight
4. everybody else -

I think Coach K does a remarkable job melding his teams and bringing out everyone's best. That's how he has done his job coaching the Olympics with all those big time egos. He has my vote.

Coach K again showed us this year how to get the most out of what you've got. There are no elite NBA talents on this years National Championship team, but there are guys that play with heart and passion for the game. You make the most with what you have, and you put your players in positions where they can excel, and that is exactly what Coach K was able to do this year and it paid off with the ultimate dividend....A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!! WWWWWWWOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there was nothing to discuss to start with, they`re both great coaches of their time, different eras. if the tourney was selected back when dean started coaching as it is today, he would have atleast 8 more trips to the dance and who`s to say they wouldnt have won 1 or 2 NC then??? you cant really compare the greatest between 2 coaches who coached different eras..

its funny how all the d00k fans can only compare k and another unc coach. the d00k program as a whole is close behind UNC's. ( but not quite there ) BTW Dean retired 13 years ago. -

it is a no brainer, Dean is the better coach. he has been retired for 13 years and k hasn't caught up yet. (except in the loss column.) he will catch up next year unless he has a back problem. -

You never saw Coach Smith screaming profanities at the players or refs, or relentless intimidation of the officials. Integrity wins therefore Coach K loses.

After winning his 4th title, I gotta go with Coach K. Both are legends and tremendous coaches, but I am biased so I'm going with K and his 4 titles. We can sit here and play the "What if?" game all day, but thats my opinion and i'm sticking to it.

Dean was a drunk and only won 2 NCAA titles in entire career despite all that talent?
He also had a negative impact on the ACC and strove to "put-down" other coaches with his off-court antics.
Real story has yet to come out. -
