It says Dean is older than K and has already retired. Coach K has done and keeps doing more.

Two great coaches and two great programs and two different times. Any honest, objective person knows that today Coach K stands alone as the best all time. All this forum is about is DUKE vs UNC. And UNC is mostly represented by losers who hate and disrespect coach K and there is clearly a whole lot of you. SO why bother. Blah blah blah

Maybe you should research the term 'homer'.

by the time kiwi came to Durm, dook had a very well established and successful basketball program (by ACC and national standards).

Both are ICON's in the game of basketball, and any negatives will have to rest for those that want to hate on a school. I truly can't see anyone knocking Dean Smith as he is in his closing days of life.

I remember reading years ago that Dean said he left the game because of all the other things involved, but he still loved coaching. Dean is/was a gentleman. He didn't curse. One of the things I also read about is the Duke/Carolina game where things got heated between Dean and K. As Dean was walking away after a heated exchange, K yelled after him, "Hey Dean - BLEEP you!" Hate that K said that, but every man is different, and when K insisted Dean also be awarded the Sportsmanship Award a few years ago, does speak highly about K and his values. K and Dean may not have been friends, but I think they shared a mutual respect for each other. Every time I think about Dean, K and Roy, I think about how fortunate we are to have these men coaching the teams we pull for. It doesn't get any better, and I'm going to hate it when Roy and K retire. No one will ever be able to replace them.

I grew up watching UNC, Wake, Duke, and State. Dean Smith was the greatest innovator since the game was invented. All teams copy what he did today. His Four Corners came from a black coach years ago in the 60's. Dean made lessor coaches think about how to use fouls near the end of a tight game. Dean was a master in doing this. He could milk the clock better than all before him, and his tight wins proves this point out. I have written this previously on the Sportsfan.

Coach K has won on every level. His wins at Duke says it all. The number of wins is in the books. But. Coach K led two Olympic teams to two Golds. His NC's are there. He will win at least one more before he retires in my opinion. Dean and K came from different eras. The game has totally changed since Dean coached. Both are ICONS in coaching. In the end Coach K will have to be on top of all coaches. His NC's, wins in general, and those two Gold Medals put him way beyond all others.

I completely agree, TB. Dean Smith could make the last couple of minutes of a game feel like an eternity. UNC could be down 12 pts with a minute to go, and the game was still FAR from over.

However, looking at both careers completely objectively, I don't think there's a viable argument that Smith was the better coach out of the two. Don't get me wrong, Dean Smith was a GREAT coach (as well as an awesome person and ambassador for the game), but the numbers don't lie - Coach K trounces Smith when you compare their careers.

+1,000,000,000 . Also felt one of the phil ford teams and the 83-84 team. Dean was principled to a fault. It would be interesting how todays game would have shaped Deans coaching, and vice-versa with K.

no doubt about it. coming back to win a game down 8 with 17 ticks left on the clock was unreal. and, no 3 point baskets either.

and, it was against dook too!

Dean stepping down RIGHT before the '97/'98 season is the ONE thing Dean did that I didn't think was fair - to the players, fans, program.

As for stubbornness, I agree, it may have cost the Heels a title. Roy is also too stubborn at times as well.

I still wouldn't trade Dean or Roy for ANY other coach. Ever.

Totally agree about Dean and end of game situations. I remember one game where the Heels were losing, with less than a minute left, and Dean called a T/O (and we all know how he hated to call those), and he told the guys, "We're the lucky ones", and he calmly devised a play, the guys executed it and Carolina won! Dean has such a brilliant basketball mind.

You're welcome. No excuses for Dean, he had the horses a few times to win it all and I do think his stubborness got in the way of winning it. For example he gave away a title when he handed Gut the Jamison/Carter team. Dean probably thought even Gut can win a title with those guys.

I thought you were tired of me bashing the trolls. Make up your mind. B)

  • kato_karma.v5 May 6, 2013

Agreed, TB on Dean's late-game strategies.

That said, 2 areas that stick out...

-not adjusting to other teams "hot" player: Dean seem to be hard-headed about double-teaming, going to a box-in-one, triangle in 2, etc...whereas coaches like V simply would not let 1 player beat him

-not feeding the ball to our "hot" players: focusing on a balanced offense was VERY productive over the regular season, but in big games, the difference is quite often determined by "riding the hot hand" (although Dean did ride Donald Williams in 1993)

I always thought Dean's end-of-game strategies were the best I had ever seen. The man could extend the last minute of a game 30 minutes, if he was behind. One of the most brilliant minds for that, IMHWPO, I've EVER seen. The truth is the truth.

I guess no one develops after college. Sure, let's credit the all stars and HOF to Deans 3 years with them instead of the players or coaching staff at the pro level. Certainly 3 years with Dean > talent and 10 years of pro coaching. UNC fans are not arrogant at all. LOL

Again this arguement swings K's way. Look at the teams that Dean won titles with. Now count the NBA all stars on those teams. Did Dean ever win a title with less than 2-3 NBA all stars on a team?

I meantioned most wins? UNC fans and their reading comprehension...

I said a complete body of work and said that the head to head was subjective.

K did more with less talent compared to the field than Dean versus the field.

UNC fans are very arrogant about Dean as this mysterious way that Dean kept himself from winning titles by following ethics. OMG wipe your chin lol.

Evil, you are the one that is confused. You should reread my and your post and just delete what you said as it in no way followed my post or any of it's content.

To recap; Cool story bro, but I never meantioned K being the WINNINGEST MEN'S D1 COACH OF ALL TIME BY FAR AND STILL GOING. I figured everyone here already knew that but thatk you for naming yet another reason he should be considered the better coach. More wins, more titles, less talented players, less developed college, no gimmicks.
