... it happened, in fact a ladder was brought out for the measuring and afterwards Dean requested that the refs go back up to tighten the rims, what a psyche job he did on both team's players. I don't remember the opponent, it was most likely during the 1970s, and it was televised. I still can't believe he got away with it, it must have caused at least a 15 minute delay in the game, and we wonder why Lefty threw chairs.

February 24, 1979: #6 Duke 47, #4 North Carolina 40
Jim Spanarkel's Senior Day game turned into one of the strangest afternoons in ACC basketball history as Duke held North Carolina scoreless for a half before knocking off the No. 4-ranked Tar Heels 47-40. Dean Smith resorted to the four corners offense and the Tar Heels held the ball throughout the first half, but Duke led 7-0 as Spanarkel forced two turnovers, assisted on a basket to Mike Gminski and scored the last bucket of the half on a short jumper. (Smith later said, "It should have been 2-0, or something like that, at the half.") North Carolina's only two shots of the first half were complete misses, that resulted in the first-ever chants of "Air ball . . . Air ball!" from the Cameron Crazies. Sparnakel added 15 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 17, hitting 8-of-9 field goal attempts. The win allowed Duke to tie North Carolina for the ACC regular season title.
Duke coach Bill Foster wasn't amused by Smith's tactics in the first half and the next day said, "I've been doing this a long time, but during the first half last night I began to think maybe I've been doing it for too long." He then added this infamous dig: "I thought Naismith invented basketball, not Deansmith." -

Dean Smith because of the innovations he brought to the game. Coach Smith also coached in the era where you had to win the ACC Tourney or you were in the NIT. He also got more out of his players that would never see the NBA with his famous Blue Team. I guess that they coached in different era's so you could make and arguement either way. I remember when K started along with Coach Valvano. In years prior to it was always Carolina at the top of the ACC battling different schools every few years. Before the shot clock the Four Corners was a scoring machine with back door layups and then they said that he would not be able to coach with a shot clock and he did that as well he always changed with the game.

This is an easy question to answer; If you pull for UNC, then you think Dean is better, everyone else knows K is the greatest coach.

Dean Smith is hands down the better of Coach K - if you don't believe it just ask K.
K is good, but his heyday was way past the peak of ACC BB. Dean coached when the league was at it's Apex and he helped it get there.
ACC basketball was much more competitive in the 70's. 80's and early 90's than it has ever been since and Dean established himself and his legacy in that lion's den.
K helped put Duke at the top of the league and keep it there, but the only trails he blazed were in Durham. He was not even relevant in the ACC until the mid-80's. By then dominance of the league had already been clearly established. -

There is no comparison between the two. Both are great coaches by K has not affected the game as a whole more than Dean.. The game changed because of his system. Why do you think the shot clock was put in. Dean helped mold the game into what it is now. K just plays by deans rules.

i might could give kay a little more credit if he had a better record against DEAN. what a lot of people don't consider is, what would kay's record be if Dean didn't have all of those players leave early for the nba. kay may have only 8-10 w's against Dean. how many players did kay ever force to go to the nba. Dean was always encouraging his players to go to the nba if he thought they could make it. like i said earlier, Dean just gets a different kind of respect than other college coaches.
