    Towel Boy

My son is an avid volleyball player, especially sand. There is no team at his HS, yet they allow girls to wrestle, pay baseball ( in middle school) and play football. They allow boys to cheerlead. Additionally this week, had new legislation regarding gender identity. My question is "How am I supposed to explain to my child, whose passion it is to play this sport...who wants to help his school in a sport he KNOWS he is good at and CAN help, "well, son, they bent the rules or changed the rules for them, but they probably won't for you."? He is obviously old enough to understand that sometimes life sucks but it is such a shame. We have just returned from CA where he played in USAV National Championship and from GA where he received training in USAV high performance... He has Olympics hopes!! He is VERY good but he is not a player that will likely hurt another player, he is average height (5'8") and any advantages would be more in skill vs physical strength. What should I do?

I believe that the reason is money. High schools don't make money. Their product is supposed to be students education, anything else is extra. There is a reason that most high schools don't have gymnastics, ice hockey, cricket, Bass Fishing.....etc....
You are doing the right thing by putting him into leagues where you can find them, even if the sport is played in high schools. That's what most parents have done even in basketball, football, baseball, soccer.
The only thing you can say to him is that the sport that he is playing, sand volleyball, is not large enough to have enough males in high school wanting to play. Another thought is how much does one such player make in their volleyball career? If they don't get something from playing, like a scholarship, a multi million dollar contract it wont catch a lot of peoples attention.
