It looks like it is going to come down to Leesville and Wake Forest again this year. They will be wrestling on January 4th. It should be exciting with great match ups. Wake Forest might have the edge if they have a full lineup but Leesville has more flexibility with their lineup.

And the season is underway! The usual suspects- Orange, Holly Springs, Cary, Riverside, and Leesville have jumped out to a good starts, but who have been the surprising area teams? Apex Friendship in its second year open has beat several teams and is off to a good start. Athens Drive has looked good. Broughton looks like a tough tournament team especially. Anyone else off to a hot start?

I know that a student involved in a Fall sport can't compete in a Winter sport until the Fall team has completed their season. Does the same also hold for the coaches?

What effect if any, will the delay of the Football championship games have on wrestling. I know that there was a weak presence among the heavier weights last year, as the football players among them had to complete the Fall season first.

Northern Durham's biggest challenge will be in the upper weights. While last year there were enough key wrestlers with experience in key places, this year they will be very bottom heavy. From 170 to heavyweight they literally have nobody though.

Riverside and all are MW regional teams for the individual side of things. If Riverside is included in the conversation they are right in with the best of the best. They return most all of their line up one or 2 grads and a transfer out, but otherwise they bring a powerful team back. I think the rest of the PAC6 struggles for the most part this year. Dual team Riverside is an East team and should be one of about 4-5 other teams looking at a possible birth in the state championship match. Riverside can match up well with Laney, Cape Fear, Holly Springs, Cary and a couple others. Northern Durham can be tough, but I think trail behind some of the other top teams out of the east. I do not see a real team threat coming from the GNR conference. West Johnston seems to be putting in a lot of work and should be improved though. Cardinal Gibbons should really be improved as well, but still have a ways to go putting 14 quality wrestlers on the mat.

How are the area teams shaping up? The usual suspects should be strong again with Orange leading the way. Leesville, Riverside, Millbrook, Holly Springs, and Cary should all be strong again. Who else is on the rise? Middle Creek? Apex? Will Wake Forest have enough top to bottom? Any tough newcomers in the area?
